Job summary

YMCA BC is seeking a part-time Exercise Physiologist to provide medical oversight for online Healthy Heart classes. The role is remote with a flexible schedule and a Tuesday/Thursday shift from 8:30am to 12:30pm, starting ASAP.

The ideal candidate holds a CEP certification (ACSM or CSEP), a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, and current First Aid/CPR. You will monitor safety, support onboarding, and collaborate with staff to deliver high-quality virtual programs.

Qualifications

  • CEP certification from ACSM or CSEP required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or Human Kinetics.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR-C & AED certification.
  • Current Group Fitness Certificate and group exercise experience is an asset.
  • Experience in cardiac rehabilitation and with older adults or chronic disease preferred.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills; provide 3 references.
  • Criminal Record check with Vulnerable sector required within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee high quality virtual exercise classes for individuals with heart disease or chronic conditions.
  • Provide medical case management, safety monitoring, and individual exercise prescription.
  • Conduct program orientation and monthly check-ins with participants.
  • Assist with intake, referrals, medical file communications, and participant registrations.
  • Report medication changes and medical status; file incident reports as needed.
  • Ensure safety by following YMCA policies and procedures for all participants.
  • Assist in emergencies and provide First Aid as required.
  • Attend staff meetings and complete required YMCA trainings.

Salary: $27.50-32.00 per hour

Nature & Scope

The YMCA Healthy Heart Program has been providing community based cardiac prevention, rehabilitation and maintenance classes in the Lower Mainland for over 48 years. Participants include individuals with known heart disease and other chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and congestive heart failure. Since the pandemic, the YMCA Healthy Heart program has been offering a fully virtual exercise program, Healthy Heart @ Home, with classes on Zoom. We are looking for a CEP to provide medical oversight for online classes.

YMCA Healthy Heart Exercise Physiologists report to the YMCA Healthy Heart Supervisor and work collaboratively with other staff, volunteers and participants. The Exercise Physiologist is responsible for program delivery, customer service, participant onboarding and support, and the overall health and safety of participants in the classes in which they work. Exercise Physiologists work closely with the Program Supervisors, and Exercise Leaders to support the overall delivery of the program.

Major Responsibilities - in this position, you will:
  • Oversee high quality exercise classes for individuals with known heart disease or other chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and congestive heart failure in a group exercise environment (virtual)
  • Assist program supervisor with medical case management including medical and safety monitoring of participants during classes, and providing individual exercise prescription and education to participants
  • Complete program orientation sessions and monthly phone call check-ins with participants as required providing advice, education and encouragement
  • Assist with the intake and onboarding function of the program including follow-up with new referrals, communication with doctor’s offices regarding medical files, database management intake tracking, preparing new participant files, participant registrations and appointment bookings, and providing overall customer service and support
  • Report any updates regarding participant’s medication changes and medical status and submit incident reports as necessary to the Program Supervisor
  • Ensure the safety of all participants, staff, and property by following YMCA standards, policies and procedures and ensuring they are adhered to by all program participants
  • Work with program staff to respond to any emergencies and provide First Aid as needed
  • Attend staff meetings and one on one supervisory meetings, and complete YMCA and program training as required
Qualification - you bring:
  • Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) certification from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or Human Kinetics
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C & AED certificate (can be obtained prior to starting)
  • Current Group Fitness Certificate and Group Exercise experience is a definite asset
  • Cardiac rehabilitation experience and experience working with older adults and/or individuals with chronic disease preferred
  • Good team player with strong customer service, relationship-building and communication skills
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
