We work collaboratively to address urgent and long-term community needs—such as poverty, mental health, food security, and community programs. As part of the national United Way Centraide network, we are grounded in local action with national reach. Executive Director The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the overall leadership, operational management, and strategic direction of United Way NWT. As the face of the organization in a smaller centre, the ED is hands-on in all aspects of operations, from fundraising to communications to partnership building. The ED works with and reports directly to the Board of Directors and plays a critical role in community impact and financial sustainability. Responsibilities

Job Description Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead the implementation of the organization’s strategic plan and annual operating plan.
  • Represent the United Way publicly with integrity, professionalism, and community-centered values.
  • Foster a strong, inclusive, and purpose-driven organizational culture.
  • Ensure the organization is compliant with United Way Canada / Centraide.

Fundraising & Donor Engagement

  • Assist with local fundraising strategies, including workplace campaigns, events, sponsorships, and individual giving.
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors, business, and foundations.
  • Community Partnership & Investment

  • Engage with nonprofit agencies, Indigenous partners, municipalities, and community groups to identify needs and collaboratives solutions.
  • Manage the Community Investment Program
  • Governance & Board Support

  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors, supporting governance, policy development, and strategic oversight.
  • Support the Board with operational tasks such as providing meeting agency and minutes, and planning of the Annual General Meeting.
  • Prepare regular reports, budgets, and recommendation for Board review.
  • Financial & Operational Management

  • Assist with the development and management of the organization’s annual budget.
  • Work closely with the bookkeeper to ensure accurate financial reports and audits, and compliance with CRA and other regulatory requirements.
  • Manage human resources, including staff supervision, development, and performance management.
  • Marketing & Communications

  • Lead internal and external communications, including media relations, newsletters, social media, and the annual report
  • Promote United Way’s brand, impact, and credibility in the community.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications

  • Proven leadership experience in the nonprofit or public sector. Experience in the Northwest Territories or in remote communities is an asset.
  • Strong background in fundraising, relationship-building, and donor stewardship.
  • Knowledge of local community issues such as poverty, housing, food insecurity, or mental health.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Financial literacy and experience managing budgets and operations.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking initiative in a small team environment.
  • Working Conditions

  • Working remotely in Yellowknife o another community in the NWT.
  • Occasional evening / weekend for meetings.
  • Some travel may be required.
