Job description

Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) / Association canadienne de protection médicale (ACPM) -- Executive Director, Member Experience / Directrice administrative ou directeur administratif, Expérience membre

Location: Primarily remote (Ottawa); Ontario or Quebec preferred

For more than a century, the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) has been a trusted partner to physicians across Canada, protecting their professional integrity, providing exceptional medico-legal advice and support, and advancing safe medical care. Today, CMPA serves a growing membership through a highly regarded, physician-centred model built on trust, expertise and human connection.

As healthcare, technology and the expectations of physicians continue to evolve, CMPA is looking ahead. A new strategic plan, rapidly advancing AI and digital capabilities, continued membership growth, and the opportunity to more fully integrate the dimensions of its mission are converging at an important point in CMPA’s evolution – one that calls for both respect for what has made CMPA successful and the courage to imagine what comes next.

At this important moment, CMPA is seeking an accomplished physician executive to help shape the future of Member Experience.

Reporting to the CEO and serving as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Executive Director will lead a large, multidisciplinary portfolio encompassing medico-legal services, membership services, physician support and wellness, and member experience planning and effectiveness. More broadly, they will help shape the future of how CMPA serves and supports physicians across Canada. CMPA is approaching this next chapter from a position of considerable strength, with a highly regarded member experience and consistently high levels of member satisfaction. The opportunity is to build on that foundation, challenging long-held assumptions about how and by whom services are delivered; harnessing data, digital capabilities and AI; creating greater integration across CMPA's mission; and ensuring its service model remains exceptional, scalable and sustainable for the future.

The successful candidate is a physician by background and an enterprise leader in mindset – strategic, curious and courageous, with demonstrated success leading complex transformation, challenging established thinking and bringing people with them through significant change. They understand the distinctive dynamics of leading physicians and are equally comfortable leading across disciplines, professions and organizational boundaries.

They combine strong business acumen and sound judgment with emotional intelligence, resilience and compassion. Comfortable operating in complexity, they build alignment without requiring unanimity, influence without relying on hierarchy, and navigate an engaged physician Council where perspectives are diverse and strongly held. They demonstrate a meaningful commitment to inclusive leadership and to creating an environment where people can perform at their best through significant change.

A medical degree, clinical experience and significant senior leadership experience in a complex healthcare, professional services or related environment are required. Experience within medico-legal, medical liability or legal environments; evolving service models; digital or AI-enabled transformation; and bilingualism in English and French would be valuable assets.

For a physician leader energized by the opportunity to honour what works, challenge what must evolve, and help future-proof one of Canada's most trusted medical organizations, this is a uniquely compelling leadership opportunity.

The CMPA is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to being responsive to those living with disabilities and strives to prevent and remove barriers to accessibility. The CMPA will provide support and accommodation in its recruitment processes to applicants living with disabilities. If you are invited to participate in an interview and/or skills assessment and have accommodation needs, please let us know.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) is a key priority, and we actively strive to build a culture of inclusion where employees can be their authentic selves and are valued for their diverse experiences and perspectives. We welcome and encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds and a variety of lived experiences to apply.

The CMPA offices, located in Ottawa, are located on the unceded, unsurrendered Territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation, whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial. We honour and pay our respect to these lands, and to all First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples throughout Turtle Island.
