Manitoba Natural Resources and Indigenous Futures is looking for an experienced leader interested in filling the role of Executive Director, Manitoba Wildfire Service. Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must have a valid class 5 Manitoba driver's licence
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime, including evenings and weekends, particularly through the wildfire operation season
  • Must be physically able to perform work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including walking over rough terrain and operating an off-road vehicle
  • Must be physically capable of travel to remote and isolated areas by road and various types of aircraft, including overnight stays in primitive accommodations

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree in a field related to environmental science, forestry, natural resource management, fire science, or a closely-related discipline. Other education may be considered in combination with relevant training and field experience.
  • Senior management experience with responsibility for managing unionized employees and significant financial resources.
  • Experience providing senior level leadership to cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to make informed decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to identify risks, assess their impact and probability, and implement strategies that mitigate or manage risk.
  • Experience leading and managing transformative organizational change.
  • Experience managing financial resources including preparation and management of operating and salary budgets.
  • Experience managing assets including acquisition and maintenance of equipment and infrastructure.
  • Experience developing strategic priorities and operationalizing them to deliver results.
  • Experience building high performing, capable, diverse and cohesive teams with the ability to motivate and manage individual performance to achieve organizational goals.

Desired:

  • Broad knowledge of wildfire management principles and tactics.
  • Practical experience in the field of wildfire management.

Duties:

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, the Executive Director is responsible for developing and implementing all wildfire suppression strategies, programming and operations for Manitoba, ensuring that wildfire preparedness levels are met and maintained during wildfire season. The Executive Director is also responsible for managing all human resources, aircraft, equipment and supplies needed for fighting wildfires. The position oversees operation of the Manitoba Wildfire Service in all aspects across the entire province and is the primary liaison with emergency management partners during emergencies including wildfire and other hazards (ex. flood) where operational and logistical assistance is provided by the Manitoba Wildfire Service. The Executive Director is a designated officer with all accompanying powers authorized by the Wildfires Act including powers of arrest, entry, search and seizure and powers to initiate and extinguish fires.
