Overview

REPORTING TO: SLA President and Executive Members

TERM: Permanent Full Time with Benefits

HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week, required to work flexible hours, including some weekends and evenings

LOCATION: Hybrid, with an office based in Regina. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain the SLA-based office for a minimum of 2-3 days a week with an option to work remotely for the remainder of the week. The successful candidate will also be required to travel and attend SLA events and meetings in various provincial and national locations.

SALARY: $75,000 - $90,000 based on experience, education, qualifications, and performance evaluated by the SLA HR Committee

The SLA is the governing body for lacrosse in Saskatchewan. The purpose of the Saskatchewan Lacrosse Associations is to equitably promote, develop and administer all aspects of the game of lacrosse in Saskatchewan and to provide opportunities for the pursuit of excellence and lifelong participation.

The Executive Director (ED) is a key leadership position within the SLA. The fundamental responsibility of the SLA ED is to manage the day-to-day operations of the SLA in accordance with the SLA Bylaws, Regulations, and Policies, along with ensuring the financial stability of the SLA in partnership with the SLA Executive. The Executive Director is responsible for managing staff operations, sustaining the organization’s finances, maintaining and building core activities and services, implementing Board policies, is accountable for all organizational performance, and the reputation of the SLA.

Reporting to the President and Executive Members, the ideal candidate will be a manager, mentor, relationship builder, and communicator. The ED is the primary communication conduit between the SLA Executive, the Local Governing Body Presidents and their Board of Directors, SLA Associations, and SLA Members, and Lacrosse Canada (LC).

The candidate will have experience in developing and implementing a strategic plan, motivating and managing staff, and have a clear understanding of the financial management of a provincial sport organization.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Governance, Policy, and Reporting
    • Works collaboratively with the Board of Directors in developing strategic plans, annual work plans and establishing quarterly objectives
    • Maintains regular contact and acts as a resource to the SLA Board of Directors; keeps them up to date to ensure that each Board of Directors member has all the information necessary to properly exercise their legal and functional responsibilities and to help them reach sound decisions and establish policies
    • Prepares and submits monthly performance reports to the SLA Board of Directors to facilitate review and monitoring of achievement and policies so that decisions are made on an informed basis (e.g., community needs and resources, strategic objectives, issues affecting delivery of programs and services, issues affecting personnel or members, business activities, program activities, personnel, finances, and other information as requested)
    • Ensures compliance with SLA bylaws, policies and procedures and government requirements, and advise the Board on the necessity of new and/or revised policies, procedures, and guidelines when appropriate
    • Prepares all materials and reporting for Board of Director’s meetings, the Annual General Meeting, and Special General Meetings, in addition to supporting the Board of Directors in administering its policies and bylaws for the election of Board of Directors and Committee Chairs
  2. Financial and Risk Management Oversight
    • Assists the VP of Finance with preparing the annual budget, controlling expenditures, presenting and reporting financial statements, and oversees financial reporting
    • Ensures SLA operates in a financially sound manner in line with its strategic objectives, organizational controls, and policies for all staff and volunteers
    • Maintains appropriate day-to-day fiscal controls over the Association, with direction from the SLA Executive Directors, to ensure all programs are within the scope of the annual budget, ensuring that revenues and expenditures meet budget expectations and projects remain with their allocated budget guidelines
    • Ensures that SLA’s accounting requirements, including preparation of financial statement for the annual audit, invoicing, bill payments, and reconciliation of bank statements are managed and submitted in a timely manner
    • Leads fundraising and sponsorship initiatives to support the organization’s strategic plan, including grant applications
    • Negotiate the annual SLA insurance program to ensure appropriate coverage for SLA activities/programs and that the Insurance company receives all information required
  3. Develop and Administer Programs
    • Work with the SLA Technical Director and Program Coordinator to advise the Board on the development and delivery of programs and services
    • Monitor programs and services to ensure consistent with member needs, grant applications and the missions and goals of the SLA
    • Oversee and assist staff and volunteers in delivering their programs and services.
    • Report to the Board on programs and services, including key success/achievements and recommendations for change or improvement
  4. Human Resources Management
    • Supervise all staff and contractors employed by the SLA
    • Ensure staffing levels consistent with member needs, the SLA Strategic Plan, and the annual budget
    • Assist with recruitment and provide recommendations to SLA HR Committee on new staff hires when required
    • With the SLA President, perform and document regular reviews of staff, provide coaching/feedback, and communicate performance expectations
    • Oversee the administration of staff compensation and benefits
  5. Maintain Member/Community Relations
    • Ensure strong working relationships with Lacrosse Canada, Government agencies, Sask Sport, Member Associations, and other sports organizations
    • Promote the sport to the lacrosse community and general public
    • Develop and support communication activities
    • Oversee and direct marketing and promotion strategies, with staff
    • Communicate regularly with the President and Executive Board Members on the day-to-day Operations of the SLA
Ideal Requirements
  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in Administration, Business Management, Non-Profit Management, or related degree plus 5+ years of progressive leadership experience working in a non-profit management role. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered
  • Strong fiscal management, oversight, and governance, with experience in developing and managing budgets, strategic operating plans, and grant funding submissions
  • Flexibility and ability to work evenings and weekends, as well as the ability to travel Provincially and Nationally to attend SLA and Lacrosse Canada events as required
  • Experience with MS Office 365 including Microsoft Teams, Word, e-mail, database, Excel spreadsheet, accounting, and presentation software
  • The Executive Director must have no conflict of interest or involvement with any lacrosse company, club, program or league in both Saskatchewan or nationally
