Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the successful management of the Wood Buffalo Food Bank, aligning the growth and execution of operations with the strategic direction of the Board. The ED will have overall strategic and operational responsibility of staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission. The ideal candidate will use a strategic mindset to drive the future success of the company by aligning teams under one vision, this candidate will execute all areas of need for the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Management: Lead, coach, develop, and retain Wood Buffalo Food Bank Association high-performance senior management team. Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components, to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents. Mentor and develop staff, encouraging career growth and fostering a collaborative, accountable environment. Maintain and update strategic, tactical, and business continuity plans to meet organizational goals.
  • Community & Stakeholder Relations: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with organizations, including industry leaders, government officials, and Indigenous communities. Promote WBFB’s mission at local and national provincial levels, representing the organization at stakeholder meetings and events. Foster partnerships and collaborations to strengthen community engagement and strategic alliances.
  • Financial Management: Manage the organization’s financial health, overseeing a multi-million $ budget. Ensure efficient utilization of resources and proactively address potential financial challenges. Act as the main contact for existing funders and seek additional funding sources if necessary.
  • Human Resources & Team Development: Lead HR functions, including recruitment, performance management, and conflict resolution. Maintain a positive work culture that attracts and retains talent. Mentor leadership skills within the team, ensuring effective day-to-day operations and adherence to organizational policies and procedures. Provide recommendations on compensation, benefits, and staffing needs.
  • Risk Management & Compliance: Ensure compliance with Alberta Employment Standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and Workers Compensation Board regulations. Oversee WBFB’s Human Resources and Safety Programs.
  • Fundraising & Communications: Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and regional expansion while simultaneously retiring building debt. Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand. Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.
  • Planning & New Business: Design the expansion and complete the strategic business planning process for the program expansion into new markets. Begin to build NEW partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with the funders, and community leaders.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • 5+ years in a leadership role
  • Experience in human resources, budgeting, finance, and safety
  • Proven success working with boards, stakeholders, and funding partners
  • Knowledge of corporate governance and strategic planning
  • Experience in creating annual work plans
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.

Education:

The ED will be thoroughly committed to Wood Buffalo Food Bank Association mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, mentorship, and relationship management experience.

  • Post-graduation degree/diploma will be considered an asset
  • A combination of experience and education will be considered

Schedule

The Employee understands and agrees that the position entails certain responsibilities which might require their attendance outside of a 40-hour work week or 8-hour workday and in some instances may result in time spent outside of regular business hours. The Employee is expected to the best of their ability to manage and balance their time within a given month based on a 40 hour per week full-time position.

  • Starting salary commensurate with experience, starting at $95k annually.

Work Location

This is a local position, reporting to the WBFB Centre in Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • A valid Class 5 License (or equivalent) with a recent abstract that reflects a safe driving record, and the ability to travel throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo
  • Criminal Record Check
  • Provide certificates of completion for relevant training and education.
