The Executive Director, reporting to the Senior Operating Officer at Royal Alexandra Hospital, is a key leadership role in patient care services, overseeing clinical operation services including Surgical Operative Services, Centralized Surgical Programming, Orthopedic Surgery Centre Inpatients, and Ophthalmology. This position works in partnerships with multiple medical leaders, ensuring collaborative decision-making with strategic planning and direction setting in alignment with the vision and implementation of zone-specific matters, including the establishment of a framework for service delivery in collaboration with Surgical Care Alberta and Acute Care Alberta Edmonton Zone, and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The Executive Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring operational systems to ensure seamless patient flow throughout the continuum of care while upholding the organization's core values. They will embody a customer service approach and a can-do attitude, fostering a culture that prioritizes patient and family needs. As the representative for Surgical Operative Services, Orthopedic Surgery Centre Inpatients, and Ophthalmology at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Operations Lead for Centralized Surgical Programming in the Edmonton Zone the Executive Director engages in strategic planning and performance measurement with a focus on patient-and family-centered care.
Description:The Executive Director has overall accountability for operations and is responsible for strategic planning and direction in alignment with the vision, mission and business plans of Alberta Health Services, the Edmonton Zone and the Royal Alexandra Hospital The Executive Director has accountability for a large staff portfolio and a significant budget. The role includes fiscal responsibility and oversight accountability for patient flow & capacity, patient & staff safety and wellness, and trusting high functioning teams and partnerships – internal and external to AHS. The ideal candidate will have proven leadership experience, characterized by a caring, strategic, and results-oriented approach. They will demonstrate the ability to lead with integrity, inspire others, and deliver on commitments. The successful candidate will have a track record of developing high-performing teams and fostering a culture of teamwork, engagement, collaboration, appreciation, and inclusivity, all while maintaining a focus on person-centered care. Strong interpersonal skills are essential for building partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. The Executive Director should have a commitment to continuous quality improvement, with expertise in human and fiscal resource management. A history of collaborative leadership aligned with the LEADS framework—excellence in leading self, engaging others, developing coalitions, and achieving results—is crucial for success in this role.
The successful candidate possesses a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a healthcare profession with a clinical background, with a master’s degree in health services leadership or business administration preferred. A minimum of five (5) years successful progressive experience in an operational leadership role in a health care organization of significant size, complexity, and diversity is required.

Graduate degree in health services leadership, business administration, or evidence of working to completion of the same. Previous Director/Executive Director experience leading operational zone and/or provincial programs. An in depth understanding and knowledge of the “Royal Alex Way.”
