THE ROLE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
- The Executive Director (ED) serves as the senior staff position of the South Shuswap Chamber of Commerce (SSCOC) to oversee and set up administrative procedures, public relations activities, research and analysis functions for the Board of Directors (BOD).
- The ED serves as the purchasing agent and officer to purchase materials and business services for the organization as per SSCOC policy.
- The ED is the Public Relations Officer for the President and BOD.
- The ED reports directly to the President and BOD.
- The ED is responsible for the implementation of SSCOC policies, goals and strategic plans.
- The ED is responsible for the prudent management of the SSCOC including all its programs and objectives.
GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide leadership in shaping the work and growth of the organization.
- Set agenda, make arrangements for committee, board and other meetings, take notes, compile and distribute Minutes and Addendums as per the President’s approval.
- Attend BOD meetings as well as other meetings or functions as required or directed.
- Oversee daily operations, program planning, events and evaluations.
- Assist the Treasurer to provide financial reports and budgets for presentation and discussion with the BOD.
- Liaise with CSRD and pursue funding to support operations and initiatives.
- Pursue funding opportunities, including grant writing and sponsorships.
- Create and submit appropriate custom and ad hoc reports to assist the BOD.
- Undertake analysis and research related to various policy initiatives to assist BOD in making decisions.
- Receive and respond to all manner of requests, queries and issues on behalf of, and to the BOD directly.
- Represents the SSCOC at the BC Chamber AGM and BC Chamber Executives AGM as and when approved within the annual budget.
- Work with departmental and corporate officials and with other organizations and associations on behalf of the BOD and other approved committees
- Organize and coordinate Chamber events and fundraising endeavours.
- Advocate on behalf of Chamber members to various levels of government, local organizations et al to support improved services within CSRD Area G and C.
- General administrative support services for the SSCOC and BOD.
MEMBERSHIP
- Promote and grow Chamber membership.
- Build relationships with members and stakeholders.
- Assist members with business development and provide networking opportunities
- Develop education opportunities and speaker programs for the membership.
- Organize and promote member networking opportunities and functions.
- Ensure membership is aware of the benefits and services offered by the SSCOC.
- Promote the Chamber benefits program for members.
- Membership invoicing and collection of member fees for Chamber membership and DoTheShu
HUMAN RESOURCES
- Hire, train, and oversee contracted support staff.
- Ensure compliance with payroll and employment regulations.
BUSINESS & COMMUNITY MARKETING
- Promote the South Shuswap region as a destination for residents, business, tourism and recreational development opportunities.
- Liaise and collaborate with key stakeholder organizations (Columbia Shuswap Regional District, Community Futures Shuswap, Shuswap Economic Development Society, Salmon Arm Economic Development Society, Sorrento & Area Community Association, BC Chamber, Regional Chambers, non-profits) and others.
WEBSITE & SOCIAL MEDIA
- Manage website updates for the SSCOC and DotheShu.
- Manage SSCOC’s social media and online presence.
- Prepare social media posts for BOD approval.
- Ensure consistency and alignment of all social media channels and the SSCOC website with the organization’s goals and branding.
- Create and distribute newsletters and other communications for members.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and public relations skills.
- Conduct business in a professional and ethical manner.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
- Ability to prepare reports and documents/correspondence.
- Strong analytical skills and financial knowledge including grant writing.
- Ability to organize and maintain an efficient operation and respond to requests in a timely manner.
- Strong decision-making skills, time management and ability to work efficiently
- Ability to train and supervise subcontracts and/or staff.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint as well as email.
- Ability to write communications and create newsletters for members.
- Experience with social media platforms, website maintenance/updates/management and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software is also considered an asset.
