Job summary

Tartan Homes in Ottawa is seeking an experienced Estimator to support the preparation of residential construction estimates and coordinate purchasing activities across estimating, procurement, construction, sales, design, and accounting.

You will perform quantity take-offs, analyze pricing, maintain cost and PO information, and ensure upgrades are accurately reflected in company systems. This role offers a stable, family‑owned environment with growth opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in estimating, procurement coordination, residential construction, or a related field.
  • Post‑secondary education in Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Estimating, Architectural Technology, or a related discipline is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of residential construction processes, materials, and procurement workflows.
  • Experience completing quantity take‑offs, pricing analysis, and purchase order coordination.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple departments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, Planswift, AutoCad and Outlook.
  • Experience using Newstar or similar construction/ERP software is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain residential construction estimates for single-family and attached homes.
  • Complete quantity take‑offs and material calculations based on construction documentation and project requirements.
  • Review structural addendums and upgrade information to identify costing impacts and required procurement updates.
  • Identify discrepancies, pricing variances, and potential cost‑saving opportunities.
  • Support tendering activities through pricing comparisons, trade coordination, and cost data analysis.
  • Maintain and update pricing databases, catalogue items, and procurement‑related records.
  • Generate and maintain purchase orders for construction materials, structural components, and customer‑selected upgrades.
  • Review and adjust purchase orders for completeness and accuracy and resolve discrepancies as required.
  • Update outstanding purchase order pricing following tender completion and supplier pricing revisions.
  • Assist in tracking procurement activities and outstanding purchase orders to support construction schedules.
  • Maintain accurate records, tracking sheets, and procurement documentation within Newstar and related systems.
  • Upload and maintain procurement‑related documentation to ensure teams have access to current information.
  • Retrieve and input upgrade selections, exterior colour information, and related operational data into company systems.
  • Generate required parts lists and material allocations for estimating and procurement purposes.
  • Assist in developing process documentation, templates, and workflow improvements to support operational efficiency.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the Estimating and Procurement department.
  • Collaborate closely with Construction, Sales, Design Centre, Procurement, and Accounting teams to ensure alignment of project information and operational requirements.
  • Respond to internal inquiries related to pricing, procurement, purchase orders, and upgrade costing.
  • Support coordination between departments to ensure timely processing of information and materials.

About this Role

As an Estimator with Tartan Homes, you will support the preparation of accurate residential construction estimates and help coordinate purchasing activities that keep projects moving efficiently. Working across estimating, procurement, construction, sales, design, and accounting, you will complete quantity take-offs, analyze pricing, maintain cost and purchase order information, and help ensure materials and upgrades are accurately reflected in company systems.

Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Costing
  • Prepare and maintain residential construction estimates for single‑family and attached homes.
  • Complete quantity take‑offs and material calculations based on construction documentation and project requirements.
  • Review structural addendums and upgrade information to identify costing impacts and required procurement updates. (custom pricing )
  • Identify discrepancies, pricing variances, and potential cost‑saving opportunities.
  • Support tendering activities through pricing comparisons, trade coordination, and cost data analysis.

Procurement & Purchase Order Coordination
