Job summary

York is seeking an Estimator in Canada to drive cost estimates and bids for design-build and other project types. The role involves collaborating with internal teams to ensure accurate, timely quotes reflective of scope and costs, with a focus on reducing risk and improving cost-effectiveness.

The successful candidate will have at least 3 years in estimation, a related engineering diploma, and strong communication skills to interact with vendors, clients, and project teams.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years’ estimator experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Construction Engineering Technology preferred.
  • Experience on Design-Build projects; light industrial and commercial experience preferred.
  • Solid understanding of building systems, materials, and building codes.
  • Knowledge of estimating, budgeting, cost control and reporting.
  • Ability to anticipate constructability issues and think creatively to solutions.
  • Capable of meeting deadlines in a fast-paced organization.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare cost estimates and budgets (level of detail varies by contract).
  • Act as lead estimator on assigned projects (design-build, construction management, or stipulated sum).
  • Lead the project tendering process.
  • Create RFP documents and solicit bids from trades.
  • Analyze project specifications, drawings, and bid documents.
  • Complete detailed takeoffs for estimates.
  • Collect, compare, and analyze quotes from subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Evaluate and level tender bids.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments to manage costs/time.
  • Collaborate with design and operations teams to ensure timely, accurate estimates.
  • Uphold York’s values and contribute to team success.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Chief Estimator

Position Summary

The Estimator plays a vital role in driving the success of YCI by providing accurate, reliable, and competitive cost estimates. This individual ensures that project quotes/bids are prepared with precision, meet company standards, deadlines, client requirements, and reflect the true scope of work and associated costs. Through effective collaboration with internal design and operation departments the Estimator will ensure that YCI’s estimates are timely, accurate and able to build from on day one of project award.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare cost estimates and budgets (level of detail required will vary depending on contract type)
  • Act as lead estimator on assigned projects throughout design-build, construction management, or stipulated sum project types
  • Be responsible for the project tendering process
  • Create RFP documents and solicitation of bids from trades
  • Analyze project specifications, construction drawings, and bid documents
  • Complete detailed takeoffs for estimates
  • Collect, compare, and analyze different quotes from subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers
  • Evaluate and level tender bids
  • Conduct regular risk assessments with a view to proactively managing increased costs or delayed schedule in construction projects

Secondary Responsibilities
  • Identify labor, material, costs and time requirements on a project basis by researching proposals, recent invoices, drawings, and any related documents
  • Revise cost estimate reports to reflect design changes, client needs,
    or when the availability of materials or labour changes
  • Advising preconstruction and operations teams about opportunities to improve cost-effectiveness of construction
  • Constantly strive to improve company processes and the quality of the finished product
What you bring to York
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience as an estimator
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Construction Engineering Technology diploma preferred
  • Experience working on Design-Build projects in a variety of sectors – light industrial and commercial experience preferred
  • A solid understanding of current building systems, materials, and building codes
  • In-depth knowledge of financial aspects of construction including estimating,
    budgeting, cost control and reporting
  • Capable of anticipating constructability issues in moderate to complex situations and thinking outside the box to create solutions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced organization continually meeting deadlines
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations
