Description

The Department of Earth, Energy and Environment in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a ESRR Science Communicator. This Recurring Part-timeposition is for approximately 11 months(based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The position reports to the Project Investigator (PI), Faculty of Science, Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment. The Science Communicator will contribute to the effective communication of project activities related to the Integrated Eastern Slopes Rivers Climate, Groundwater, Surface Water Assessment Project (ESRR). The project's key outcomes include (a) quantification of each main water sources (especially groundwater) and understanding of their ages and flow pathways; (b) climate change-driven variations in these water sources at several temporal scales (e.g., seasonal, interannual, and/or decadal scales); and (c) linkages among climate and various water sources (in terms of both quantity and quality).

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Work independently in good consultation extended research team to package ongoing research insights into layperson-accessible science communication pieces that could include storyboards, animations, or static displays.
  • Compose and publish the science communication pieces on appropriate platforms, potentially including a project website (hosted at UCalgary), LinkedIn, and/or other social media posts.
  • Work with early career researchers on effective and innovative visualization of their research data and interpretation (that could also be used for science communication pieces.
  • Coordinate the improvement of a project's branding and visual identity.
  • Develop and maintain the project's communication channels, including social media and apply up-to-date tools to enhance the research project's social media presence.
  • Contribute to developing and maintain the project's stakeholder lists (including media lists) for dissemination purposes.
  • Participate in research project meetings and support the preparation of internal presentations.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor (BSc) or college degree, Master of Science (MSc) student with a blend of experience water and climate science and/or communications, media studies or any other relevant field.
  • Strong science written communication skills, comprehension skills, problem solving, data analysis, attention to detail, creativity.
  • A demonstrated record of communications on social media or other platforms, preferably in science communication.
  • Experience of successfully delivering communications and publication plans targeting different audiences through different communications channels.
  • Ability to engage both with researchers and lay audiences.
  • Knowledge and experience of creating different types of content, including social media posts, articles and video/audio content.
  • Good English writing skills, with the ability to convey information in a compelling and concise way and to re-package complex or technical content in an accessible format.
  • Demonstrable experience of working well in multi-disciplined/cross-functional team.
  • Excellent computer, IT skills, Microsoft Office applications, very familiar with design programs and social media platforms.
