ESL Teacher, Appleby Summer Programs
Monday to Friday, June 30 – August 22, 2025 (4 and 8 week contracts available) Compensation: $1,250

Appleby College’s Summer ESL Program welcomes students from around the world with diverse languages and backgrounds. Students attend Appleby College to improve their English language skills and experience Canada. The ESL Program is modeled after the Appleby College student experience, with a goal of providing summer students with a snapshot of what life as an Appleby College student is like. Students will live in boarding, attend class, participate in extra-curricular activities, and off-campus excursions. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Academics, Ancillary Programs, the Teacher, Summer ESL Program, will support the ESL Summer Program’s mission to provide fantastic summer learning opportunities and will be responsible for teaching an ESL credit course in one of five levels (Levels A through E) following the Ministry of Education’s guidelines, as well as completing diagnostic tests on the first day of the program. Teachers are expected to be on campus Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • The teacher must support in their teaching practice, the Mission, Vision and Curriculum of Appleby College’s Summer ESL program.
  • Be a supportive, positive, and contributing member of the Appleby College community, both sharing and accepting constructive feedback.
  • Attend and supervise weekday education excursions, where classroom hours will continue to be accumulated in accordance with Ministry guidelines.
  • Ensure implementation of Appleby College Summer ESL expectations and content.
  • As teachers are present on campus, they are expected to support and encourage the appropriate behavior and conduct of the students in and around the campus.
  • Administer oral and written assessment tests to incoming students to determine their initial English level.
  • Familiarize with the mainstream English curriculum at both the general high school level and Appleby to ensure smooth transition after students complete the summer program.
  • For each course, a teacher is expected:
    • To be knowledgeable and current with subject matter as outlined by the Course of Study and Ontario curriculum documentation.
    • Establish a positive rapport and a solid level of understanding of student needs, while engaging the students as active learners in the classroom.
    • To have completed appropriate planning and preparation for each class.
    • To utilize appropriate methods of assessment and evaluation that are consistent with the Course of Study and with departmental and school expectations.
    • Maintain an appropriate level of discipline in the classroom.
    • Maintain an attendance roster for each course.
    • Maintain an appropriate level of communication regarding student performance and progress with the student, parents, boarding life team and Assistant Director Academics, Ancillary Programs.
    • Maintain and record appropriate marks and comments for each student in each class for each report card.
    • Attend all training sessions and program meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skill and Technical Ability:

  • Post-Secondary Education at the University level.
  • Teacher education training (B.Ed., M.Ed.) or significant teaching experience in another setting (i.e. University, College, etc.).
  • Previous ESL teaching experience required.
  • Ontario College of Teachers (or equivalent) an asset.
  • Teachers will possess appropriate academic credentials illustrating a high level of knowledge and expertise in their teaching discipline.
  • Technical aptitude.

Workplace Requirements and Conditions:

  • As a condition of employment, if over 18 yrs., a criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening is required.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR is required.
  • Attend mandatory training Saturday May 31, 2025.
  • Occasional Overtime.
  • The contract length and workday varies, depending on the course.
