Job Title: Equipment Operator

Department: Project Execution

Reporting to: Site Supervisor

Job Purpose and Objectives

The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe operation of heavy-duty equipment for ground excavation and material handling, including but not limited to wheeled and tracked excavators of various capacities, skid steer, loader, telehandler, AWP, and forklifts. They assist the operations team to ensure efficient project execution while adhering to all government and Bothar HSE standards. Candidates should have knowledge of operating wheeled and tracked excavation/material handling equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Sinking shafts utilizing various methodologies and operating equipment below grade.
  2. Installing and working in trench boxes and shoring.
  3. Working in confined spaces and at heights.
  4. Using multiple attachments on equipment, e.g., buckets, breakers, grapples, sweepers, forks.
  5. Working in rotation in congested urban areas, remote locations, day/night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  6. Operating heavy equipment in compliance with safety policies and procedures.
  7. Ensuring all tickets are current and valid before operating equipment.
  8. Coordinating with the site supervisor to meet OH&S requirements, including valid locates, slope back on excavations, spoil pile crossing agreements, etc.
  9. Loading and unloading equipment from vehicles and trailers.
  10. Maintaining, cleaning, and storing company equipment, materials, and work sites safely.
  11. Documenting pre-use equipment inspections and reporting deficiencies.
  12. Performing daily maintenance and assisting with routine repairs.
  13. Assisting team with laboring activities when not operating equipment.
  14. Participating in daily HSE meetings and inspections.
  15. Tracking volumes and loads during mucking out drill cuttings.
  16. Mixing and drying cuttings prior to loading out.
  17. Reporting low inventory of consumables.
  18. Cleaning and fueling equipment onsite.
  19. Following equipment specifications and limitations.
  20. Inspecting and documenting rigging accessories before use.
  21. Setting up exclusion zones.
  22. Assisting others on site with their tasks as needed.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

Candidates should have a comprehensive understanding of excavation procedures, experience with operating various excavation machines, knowledge of hydraulic flow rates, and familiarity with lifting attachments and OH&S regulations.

Physical Demands

  • Prolonged standing, walking, or sitting.
  • Visual acuity for distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Manual dexterity for handling objects and controls.
  • Climbing stairs/ladders, balancing, stooping, kneeling, walking on uneven ground.
  • Lifting up to 75 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to hear alarms, voices, radio transmissions.
  • Work in all weather conditions, inside and outside.
  • Confined space work capability.
  • Working day/night shifts, including holidays.
  • Pass pre-employment physical.

Qualifications

  • Experience in oil field, lease construction, heavy civil construction.
  • Tunneling/underground experience is an asset.
  • Minimum 4-5 years of specialized experience.

Required safety tickets include WHMIS, First Aid, CSTS or PCST, Confined Space Entry and Rescue, Fall Arrest/Protection, H2S Alive, with assistance available for missing tickets.

  • Position assigned to yard and field locations; hours vary, including night shifts.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening required.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
