Job summary

Johnson Controls, Inc. is seeking an Intermediate CAD Designer to create, modify and manage detailed 2D and 3D models for engineering and product development projects.

Translate sketches into accurate drawings while complying with ASME Y14 and internal quality standards. Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of professional experience in CAD drafting or design.
  • 2–5 years of experience supporting mechanical products and assemblies in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in at least one major CAD platform (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, Inventor, Creo).
  • Strong understanding of dimensioning, tolerancing, and drafting standards (GD&T if applicable).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and engineering documentation.

  • Identify design issues and propose practical solutions to improve manufacturability or constructability.
  • Ensure all work complies with company standards, industry codes, and project requirements.

Job description

The Intermediate CAD Designer is responsible for creating, modifying, and managing detailed 2D and 3D models used for engineering, architectural, or product‑development projects. This role supports project engineers and senior designers by translating concepts, sketches, and specifications into accurate technical drawings while ensuring compliance with industry standards and internal quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Required Qualifications
  • College diploma in mechanical engineering design and/or drafting technology, or a related field
  • 2–5 years of professional experience in CAD drafting or design.
  • 2-5 years of experience supporting mechanical products and assemblies in a fast-pacedenvironment
  • Proficiency in at least one major CAD platform (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, Inventor, Creo).
  • Strong understanding of dimensioning, tolerancing, and drafting standards (GD&T if applicable).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and engineering documentation.
  • Solid knowledge of materials, fabrication methods, or construction practices relevant to Manufacturing.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in Inventor & Creo
  • Experience with 3D modeling, assemblies, and parametric design.
  • Familiarity with PDM/PLM systems (e.g., Vault, Windchill, SolidWorks PDM).
  • Exposure to simulation tools (FEA, CFD) or rendering software.
  • Experience working in industries such as manufacturing, architecture, aerospace, automotive, or product design.
  • Associate degree or technical certification in drafting, design technology, engineering technology, or related field.
Soft Skills
  • Strong problem‑solving mindset.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting team objectives.
  • Organized, methodical approach to documentation and revisions.
  • Willingness to learn new tools, standards, and workflows.
  • Create fabrication drawings with weld symbols, machining notes, and GD&T.

  • Build parametric models, assemblies, and exploded views.
  • Support prototyping and testing activities.
