Job summary

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories is seeking an Environmental Specialist to ensure environmental compliance at the Whiteshell site in Manitoba. The role oversees effluent and environmental monitoring programs and collaborates with project teams to advance regulatory compliance and environmental stewardship.

The position requires an environmental degree or equivalent experience, strong knowledge of regulations, and the ability to work well in a team.

Qualifications

• University degree (4 years) in Environmental Studies or related discipline or 10 years of equivalent experience.
• Very good understanding of environmental management principles and regulatory expectations.
• Familiarity with environmental monitoring techniques and radiation protection knowledge is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate internal and external ISO audits and compliance evaluations.
• Develop and update Environmental Aspect Assessment and Operational Control reports.
• Deliver training to internal staff.
• Gather and evaluate site radiological and non-radiological effluent monitoring results.
• Promote improvement, issue communications, report performance, and write summaries.

Our Whiteshell location is looking for an Environmental Specialist to oversee environmental compliance, support effluent and environmental monitoring programs, and collaborate with project teams. What you will be doing!

• Coordinating internal and external ISO audits and compliance evaluations.
• Developing and updating Environmental Aspect Assessment reports and Operational Control reports with facility managers and staff.
• Delivering training to internal staff.
• Gathering and evaluating site radiological/non-radiological effluent monitoring results from various media.
• Promoting improvement, issuing letters or memos, reporting on performance, and writing summary reports as requested.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What We Are Looking For

• Education
  • A University degree (4 years) in Environmental Studies or related scientific disciplines (including Physics and Chemistry) OR Ten (10) years of equivalent post-educational experience in environmental management may be considered.
• Experience
  • A very good understanding of environmental management principles is essential.
  • Familiarity with various environmental monitoring techniques would be an asset.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Familiarity with federal, provincial and municipal regulations.
  • Working knowledge of radiation protection principles an asset.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to work effectively in a team setting.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions

• We have a compressed work week: Four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day for a forty (40) hour work week, starting at 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• This position is part of the WPEG Union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in the WPEG Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
