Reporting directly to the Environmental Manager, the Environment Specialist supports the implementation of sustainability requirements on the Eskay Creek Mine site. This site-based role will work across operations departments and is responsible for pro-actively supporting site operations consistent with legislation requirements, permits, and other commitments made by the Company.

The Environment Specialist will enable site operations consistent with compliance requirements, implement the site Environmental Management System (EMS) and site environmental initiatives. Further working closely with the Skeena Sustainability team to support the development of the Revitalization Project including implementing various agreements and furthering our relationship with the Tahltan Central Government.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

The Environment Specialist performs a wide range of duties including some or all the following:

  • Coordinates the implementation and maintenance of the site Environmental Management System (EMS) to proactively manage environmental compliance, issues, risk, and performance
  • Oversees consultant’s work and coordinates required Qualified Professionals (QPs) to complete required aspects of the EMS
  • Works collaboratively and proactively with the Operations team to enable site operations to proceed consistent with the legislative, permit, and other commitments requirements and on schedule and budget
  • Coordinates the completion of required compliance reporting including the analysis, interpretation, and effective communication of environmental data to inform site management decisions
  • Leads the site environmental team in the absence of the Environmental Manager
  • Supports the implementation of the reclamation and closure plan and planning including reclamation research
  • Participates in environmental aspects of the site emergency preparedness and response planning
  • Supports the development of the site environmental team including budget management, scheduling of activities, and effective resourcing to support the completion of required activities
  • Develop and maintain internal and external relationships required to manage site sustainability requirements including promotion of Tahltan management and governance related to environmental matters
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to site teams and site operations
  • Oversees site data and records management consistent with regulatory and company requirements
  • Supports the implementation of sustainability initiatives such as developing, tracking, and reporting on Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) metrics
  • Maintain accountability with internal and external team members on key deliverables to drive a performance-based culture
  • All other related duties

The Ideal Candidate

  • Must have a minimum of 6 years’ experience in site/operational environmental management preferably in the mining sector, on comparable projects
  • Broad-based experience with environmental aspects related to the mining industry, including but not limited to water quality, ML/ARD, construction environmental management, and contractor management
  • Demonstrated success implementing Environmental Management Systems, and compliance requirements across multi-discipline teams
  • Experience in an environmental leadership role as a project owner/operator
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree or diploma in a field related to regulatory approvals and/or directly relevant environmental discipline
  • Solid understanding of the BC and federal regulatory processes, and technical environmental studies as relevant to mining project development
  • Demonstrated capability and experience working with Indigenous governments/communities including history, protocols, values, and governance and implementing those values.
  • Registered as a Qualified Professional, or eligible for, preferred e.g., P.Ag, R.P.Bio, P.Eng
  • Strong organization skills, managing, tracking, and recording multiple tasks and a heavy workload
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills to support communication of permitting requirements across the organization
  • Expertise with a variety of computer programs (e.g., MS Office, Databases, Aconex)
  • Motivated and willing to take ownership of tasks
  • Energetic in pursuit of continuous improvement processes
  • Shares knowledge readily and encourages personal development
  • Available for business travel as required by the company

Working Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace airport, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena’s Travel Policy.

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.

Compensation

The expected salary range for this position is CA$70,000 - CA$125,000, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
