Job Description:

Parsons is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Terrestrial Ecologist / GIS Technician to join our Energy and Environment team. This position will focus on preparing arborist reports, reviewing and summarizing tree inventory data, and utilizing Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS Pro) to support planning and design of infrastructure projects. Occasional field work may be required. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in ecology, especially in tree identification, report writing, data interpretation, and visualization.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Prepare arborist reports including recommendations for tree care, preservation, and management.
  • Utilize ArcGIS Pro to analyze spatial data, create maps, and manage ecological datasets.
  • Collaborate with project teams to integrate tree inventory data into broader ecological and environmental assessments.
  • Coordinate and assist in managing fieldwork activities, ensuring efficient scheduling, resource allocation, and safety compliance.
  • Conduct comprehensive tree inventories, including species identification, health assessments, and measurements.
  • Manage project deliverables to meet internal and external stakeholder deadlines.
  • Perform occasional fieldwork in various environments, ensuring accurate data collection and safety adherence.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations effectively through reports and presentations.
  • Stay current on industry standards, best practices, and emerging technologies in arboriculture and GIS.
  • Perform other duties as required.
What Required Skills You’ll Bring:
  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Ecosystem Restoration, Ecology, Environmental Science, Forestry, Arboriculture, or related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in tree inventories, arborist reporting, or related work.
  • Proficiency in GIS, especially ArcGIS Pro.
  • Strong knowledge of tree species identification, health assessment, and arboricultural practices (winter identification is a plus).
  • Experience in coordinating fieldwork and managing project deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of regulations related to trees in Ontario.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with GPS data collection and spatial analysis.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle.
  • Willingness to work on out-of-town assignments.
What Desired Skills You’ll Bring:
  • Certification as an ISA Certified Arborist or the ability to obtain it within 1 year of employment.
