Environmental Scientist/Project and Portfolio Manager
Working as an Environmental Scientist/Project and Portfolio Manager in the Brownfield & Assessment Service Group, providing environmental site assessment (ESA), remediation, and re-development services for clients in Ontario and other jurisdictions in Canada as experience fits. This position focuses on growing new and recurring business, mentoring high-performing client teams, and executing excellent project management services. The incumbent establishes strong client relationships and utilizes business acumen to develop opportunities aligned with MEMS’ Business Plan. The role involves building on MEMS' experienced teams to successfully execute complex work plans, managing multiple projects with various project managers, primarily in a remote office environment.
Key Responsibilities:
The key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Growth
- Implementing and maintaining client growth plans to foster long-term repeat business.
- Communicating client insights to management and developing appropriate responses.
- Supporting business development by facilitating networking, meetings, and providing technical resources.
Client Portfolio and Project Management
- Managing a portfolio of complex client sites, overseeing project teams and scope execution.
- Managing medium to high complexity projects, including multiple disciplines and regulatory compliance.
- Applying portfolio and project management techniques, including change management, leadership, and client relationship maintenance.
- Ensuring health & safety requirements are understood and implemented.
Technical Engagement
- Providing technical direction in proposal and scope preparation for assessment and risk projects.
Mentorship
- Identifying competency gaps and communicating these to leadership.
- Contributing to mentorship and training programs.
- Supervising and promoting career development of staff.
Qualifications:
- Minimum five years’ experience in environmental site assessment and remediation, preferably in consulting.
- Experience managing client relationships successfully.
- Knowledge of provincial legislation and environmental site assessment processes.
- Eligibility for professional membership.
- Ability to meet site access requirements, including drug, alcohol, and fitness testing.
- Valid, non-GDL Class 5 Driver’s license.
Additional Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of current provincial and federal legislation and assessment processes.
- Understanding of Ontario environmental regulations and contaminated site management.
- Experience with contaminants such as petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, heavy metals, and others listed.
- Effective communication skills, computer proficiency, and ability to work independently or in teams.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, self-motivation, and safety-conscious attitude.
Working Conditions:
- Flexible office and remote work environment, with occasional site visits.
- Prolonged computer use and physical activities related to site work.
