Role Overview/Purpose:

To support compliant and environmentally responsible operations, Alamos Gold is seeking a motivated Environmental Monitor to join our Environmental & Community Relations Team. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop and grow your environmental career in a diverse and exciting work environment.

Working as part of a team to conduct field-based environmental programs to support meeting the mines’ environmental targets, while contributing towards a positive environmental culture across the mine site. Key activities include conducting inspections, maintaining air quality monitoring equipment, collecting groundwater and surface water samples in accordance with established methods, streamflow measurements, supporting field surveys, maintaining environmental databases and reporting. As a partnered position with Michipicoten First Nation the role is be divided between Dubreuilville (Island Gold District) and Wawa (MFN), and additional responsibilities maybe assigned by consent of both parties.

  • Field data collection:
  • Conduct inspections, collect field data and samples according to the monitoring schedule, adhering to internal standard procedures.
  • Perform downloads, calibration and maintenance of field and lab equipment.
  • Collect environmental samples, such as surface water, groundwater, and air, and record field measurements and notes.
  • Prepare samples for shipment to the laboratory.
  • Assist in streamflow measurements and topographic surveys.
  • Assist with hazardous waste management.
  • Assist with environmental incident investigations and response.
  • Conduct data entry, record keeping and reporting.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of health and safety protocols and internal procedures.
  • Adhere to site health and safety protocols, including actively participating in day-to-day safety meetings.
  • Follow environmental procedures, techniques and regulations.

Other duties:

  • Regular ATV and snowmobile operation.
  • Lifting up to 50lbs (large coolers of water samples, inflatable boats, generators, ice augers).
  • This is a field-based position where is exposure to inclement weather, bugs, uneven terrain is common.
  • Work safely and contribute to safe practices by the IGD team and all contractors.
  • Conduct environmental monitoring as required by permits and according to IGD’s Management Plans and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Follow QA/QC requirements and procedures.
  • Conduct inspections and audits of contractor environmental management system (EMS) and environmental activities (e.g. waste management).
  • Interact and communicate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team consisting of environmental professionals, engineers, and contractors.

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Technical Diploma in Environmental or Natural Sciences (Desirable).
  • Must be a member of Michipicoten First Nation* or relative.
  • G Class Driver’s License (Required).
  • Entry level to 2 years’ experience conducting environmental sampling and executing surface and groundwater quality management programs at a major industrial site.
  • Previous experience with environmental monitoring/sampling and data tracking (e.g. some combination of stream/lake sampling, benthic/sediment sampling, groundwater sampling, fish sampling, stream flow measurement, vegetation identification, erosion/sedimentation monitoring etc).
  • Mining operational experience is preferred but other similar industrial site experience will be considered.
  • Previous experience with mentoring less experienced Monitors or Technicians would be considered an asset.
  • Valid Level 1 First Aid Certificate (or willingness to undertake training).
  • ATV and snowmobile Operator’s Certificate (or willingness to undertake training).
  • Pleasure Craft Licence (or willingness to undertake training).
  • May require extended periods away from home.
  • Must be able to drive 4x4 vehicle and ATV.
