Job Description

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. The Environmental Management Specialist develops, implements, and maintains the environmental management program elements for the organization to the Metrolinx Environmental Management System (EMS), Environmental Protection Act and other regulations and best practices to effectively manage organizational environmental risks and drive continual performance improvement.

What will I be doing?

  • Develops, implements, maintains, and continuously improves an Environmental Management System (EMS), (including programs, policies, procedures, tools and training) that adheres to ISO 14001:2015, regulatory requirements and best practices, while meeting operational needs and constraints.
  • Maintains corporate EMS records in accordance with EMS Document Control procedures
  • Leads, plans and conducts objective environmental audits on the adequacy and effectiveness of the EMS processes, procedures and internal controls, with the objective of proactively identifying and mitigating environmental non-compliance, risks and opportunities.
  • Leads, plans and conducts objective environmental audits on environmental regulatory compliance with respect to chemical management, waste and subject waste management, air emissions, refrigerant control, tanks and fuel management, water and effluent, contaminated sites, construction environmental controls, and wildlife and vegetation.
  • Provides information and procedural assistance to stakeholders to meet EMS and legislative requirements.
  • Prepares EMS documents, guidance documents, one-pagers, newsletters, training programs, checklists and other corporate tools for EMS implementation and communication.
  • Assists management by providing information, interpretation, and clarification of compliance requirements and permit/approval conditions.
  • Identifies emergent maintenance and capital rehabilitation improvement strategies and projects that will drive environmental performance.
  • Identifies, researches, develops, implements, and recommends changes to programs and standards for environmental protection, due diligence, mitigation, and improved regulatory adherence.
  • Reviews existing policies and procedures and prepares recommendations for improvements and corrective action.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Completion of a diploma in related discipline - or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed equivalent
  • Demonstrates experience completing and or complying with environmental audit and regulatory requirements, preferably within the transportation, manufacturing, or contaminated sites sectors.
  • Experience with the implementation or audit of ISO Management Systems, preferably ISO 14001:2015.
  • Expert knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements governing environmental aspects including but not limited toISO 14001:2015, by-laws, regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Expert knowledge of ISO 14001:2015 Standard, including framework implementation, program development and audit.
  • Knowledge of environmental aspects of transportation and facility management is an asset.
  • Developing and delivering environmental compliance training programs.
  • Interpersonal and oral/written/presentation skills to assist with meeting environmental compliance reporting requirements and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail to effectively manage work, conduct inspections and audits, prepare reports.
