About The Job
The Environmental Health Officer will:
- Manage and deliver evidence-based health protection programs to reduce risks and improve community health.
- Practice according to the standards of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors - BC Branch.
- Utilize advocacy, partnership, education, risk management, compliance, and legal application to fulfill the mission.
The role involves enforcing health legislation, conducting inspections and risk assessments, identifying environmental health factors, controlling communicable diseases, providing education and consultation, and ensuring community development aligns with a healthy environment.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide consultation, education, enforcement to prevent disease and health hazards.
- Perform inspections on food establishments, water systems, recreational facilities, personal and care facilities, ensuring compliance with regulations.
- Investigate complaints, conduct surveys, interpret results, and advise the public on health risks.
- Prepare reports, collect samples, interpret lab results, and participate in court proceedings.
- Respond to emergencies related to food, water, or vector-borne diseases, and participate in emergency planning.
- Conduct epidemiological investigations and follow-up for communicable diseases and food poisoning cases.
- Assist in licensing and health assessments of care facilities, evaluate hazards, and advise on corrective actions.
- Review and assess plans for food premises, water supplies, recreation, and community care facilities, and approve or reject permits.
- Review submissions from government agencies and recommend approvals based on environmental health impacts.
- Evaluate development proposals to improve health through community planning and design.
- Participate in local government committees and land use planning documents.
- Ensure compliance with health legislation through education, persuasion, and enforcement tools.
- Document activities, maintain records, participate in workshops, provide training, and manage equipment.
- Attend seminars and meetings to stay current on health issues, and perform other duties as required.
