Position Summary
Interior Health is looking for an experienced Environmental Health Engineer to join our team on a full-time permanent basis.

This position will involve working at different sites, offering a flexible work location in the west of the Interior Health Region.

About the job:
In accordance with established vision and values of the organization, the purpose of this position is to protect public health and safety through the application of Environmental Health Engineering practices. Responsibilities include:
  • Reviewing and approving construction pursuant to the Health Act as delegated by the Medical Health Officer.
  • Acting as a Drinking Water Officer pursuant to the Drinking Water Protection Act and Regulations.
  • Analyzing and resolving Environmental Health Engineering problems and related issues.
  • Providing engineering expertise, advice, and guidance to Medical Health Officers, Environmental Health Inspectors, other agencies, and the public on environmental health issues.
  • Providing professional Environmental Health Engineering support in identifying, resolving, and preventing community environmental health problems.

Typical duties and responsibilities:
  • To review and approve construction of waterworks and swimming pools pursuant to health legislation by:
    • Reviewing plans and specifications submitted by professional engineers and architects.
    • Negotiating with design engineers on proposals which do not comply with public health engineering requirements.
    • Approving plans and issuing certificates of approval permitting construction.
    • Monitoring construction projects to ensure compliance.
    • Requiring major adaptations of engineering technology on a site-specific basis.
    • Directing and monitoring private consultants and professionals regarding compliance.
    • Reviewing and approving or rejecting products, devices, and materials proposed for use in water systems or swimming pools.
    • Reviewing and assessing package sewage treatment plants and related devices.
  • To analyze and resolve Environmental Health Engineering problems by:
    • Conducting technical investigations and analyses to resolve complex problems.
    • Developing prototype solutions for public health engineering concerns.
    • Investigating and providing advice on engineering aspects of waterworks systems and waste management applications.
    • Monitoring water treatment performance in high-risk systems.
    • Providing expert testimony as required during legal actions.
  • To provide engineering expertise by:
    • Providing engineering advice to Environmental Health Inspectors and Medical Health Officers.
    • Reviewing the design of sewage/waste disposal systems.
    • Participating in committees dealing with public health engineering issues.
    • Testing new hypotheses and technology for practical suitability.
  • To provide professional public health engineering support by:
    • Assisting in the protection of water supply sources.
    • Participating in community development exercises.
    • Consulting with Medical Health Officers on engineering aspects of submissions.

Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience:
Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia. Minimum of five years experience in water supply, waste disposal, or environmental management related to public health. Current valid BC Driver’s License.
