Job summary

Thurber Engineering is seeking an Environmental Field Technician to join our team in Oakville or Pickering, Ontario. The role focuses on environmental and hydrogeological field work across the GTA with training provided.

You will support field programs, perform monitoring, sampling, and reporting tasks under supervision, working with engineers and project managers in a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Environmental, Geological or Civil Technology.
  • Licence to operate well technicians is an asset (O.Reg. 903).
  • 1–2 years of field experience preferred; not required.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct borehole drilling and site investigation programs under supervision.
  • Observe installation of groundwater monitoring wells.
  • Perform groundwater level measurements and slug tests.
  • Conduct groundwater sampling following regulations.
  • Monitor private drinking water wells and liaise with project staff.
  • Support project managers with reports and data as needed.

Job description

Overview

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Field Technician to join our team in Oakville or Pickering, Ontario.

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials.

Responsibilities

As our Environmental Field Technician, you will carry out environmental and hydrogeological field work across the GTA and Ontario. The work will consist of a wide range of activities at many different investigation sites to support Thurber’s Environmental and Hydrogeological discipline. It is anticipated that the majority of the work will be in the field, and when there are gaps between field assignments, the hired applicant would assist the environmental and hydrogeological project managers with varied assignments, such as conducting online environmental background searches, coordinating the preparation of environmental figures, and preparation of components of reports, such as data tables.

The majority of the duties will comprise field work, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Guide, observe, record and manage borehole drilling and site investigation programs;
  • Guide and observe installation of groundwater monitoring wells;
  • Conduct monitoring well development, groundwater level measurement using manual and electronic measuring devices, and slug tests to estimate hydraulic conductivity of screened geology;
  • Conduct groundwater sampling programs for environmental and hydrogeological purposes, including purging, measurement of field parameters, and collection of samples in accordance with regulations;
  • Conduct monitoring and sampling of private drinking water wells; and
  • Liaising with project engineers/scientists and site representatives.

All work will ultimately be conducted under the guidance of a Professional Engineer, Professional Geoscientist or Project Manager. You will report to a Team Lead for work assignments. While former experience is an asset, you will be provided with training, including health and safety practices, field work procedures, including Standard Operating Procedures where available, and office tasks as needed. Some assignments will be in remote locations or in locations that are located far from the office, in which case staying in temporary accommodations will be required and will be paid for by the company, in addition to a per diem for meals.

Qualifications and Assets
  • Environmental, Geological or Civil Technology Diploma or similar;
  • Possess or ability to obtain a Well Technician Licence under O.Reg. 903 would be an asset;
  • Past experience with the above duties would be an asset;
  • Applicants with 1-2 years of experience may be given preference; however, prior experience is not required;
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment;
  • A Class G Driver’s Licence is required; and,
  • A Clean 3 Year Driver's Abstract and an Insurance Claims Experience Letter are required.
Base Salary Range
  • $50,000 - $60,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week.
  • The posted wage range for this position represents the range for the experience and qualifications noted in this posting.
  • The offered wage may be adjusted upward for candidates whose qualifications and experience exceed those expressed in this posting.
  • Candidates with less experience and qualifications may be considered at a reduced starting wage.
