Who We Are Looking For
New-Indy is looking for a highly experienced and skilled Environmental Director to provide both strategic and operational environmental leadership and support across paper mills, containerboard facilities, and packaging operations nationwide. This role ensures federal and multi-state regulatory compliance, along with an ability to navigate complex permitting analysis. Provides a deep understanding of environmental laws, regulations and best practices while benchmarking and supporting continuous improvement in environmental performance.
What You Will Do
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement New- Indy’s long-term environmental and capital spending strategy in alignment with the company’s sustainability and best practice initiatives objectives.
- Advise executive leadership on environmental risks, opportunities and regulatory trends.
Regulatory Compliance
- Oversee compliance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations (EPA, federal, state and local)
- Lead environmental efforts, audits and ensure timely resolution of findings.
- Maintain all environmental permits and oversee all reporting (air, water, waste, stormwater, etc.).
- Ensure company-wide complete and timely compliance with environmental laws and regulations
Sustainability & Innovation
- Collaborate with Sustainability Director to reduce environmental impact of all operations.
- Promote fiber recovery initiatives and alternative fuel usage.
Training & Best Practices
- Conduct environmental training and development for all site personnel.
- Develop and distribute environmental management tools (e.g., checklists, audit packets, compliance calendars).
- Facilitate environmental roundtables and cross-functional workshops.
Due Diligence & Risk Management
- Support environmental assessments for investments, acquisitions, and other property transactions.
- Coordinate with internal and external teams on all environmental reviews, consent orders, and initiatives.
Reporting & Communication
- Serve as the primary liaison with neighboring communities and regulatory agencies
- Represent the company in industry associations
- Oversee all state and federal reporting and public disclosures related to environmental performance
- Prepare internal and external environmental performance reports.
What You Will Need
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, , or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 10+ years of experience in environmental management, preferably in manufacturing or packaging with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Deep understanding of federal and state environmental regulations, including air quality, water discharge, hazardous waste, and sustainability reporting.
- Demonstrated success in leading corporate-wide initiatives and achieving measurable environmental performance improvements.
- Experience with environmental permitting, compliance audits, and regulatory interactions.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex environmental data and translate it into actionable strategies.
- Proficiency in environmental management systems
- Excellent verbal and written communication, project management, and analytical skills
What You Should Know
- This role will typically involve a mix of office work and on-site interactions with manufacturing facilities.
- 25% minimum travel required to work directly with manufacturing locations across the US.
Pay Transparency: The starting annual salary for this position ranges from $175,000 to $185,000 annually.
