The City of Edmonton is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Coordinator to join our dedicated Environment and Climate Resilience section within Urban Planning and Economy. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and improving the City's environmental compliance with a focus on biophysical and aquatic regulations.
The Environmental Coordinator provides crucial support to assigned client business areas, ensuring the effective management and maintenance of the organization's environmental management system (Enviso) in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard to continuously enhance the City’s environmental performance. This system is vital for protecting the environment, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation with a lifecycle approach from permitting to monitoring and implementation. Collaborate with technical, environmental, and engineering specialists regarding water and wetland regulations to achieve water resources objectives and targets. Your work will involve planning, supporting, and coordinating activities to maintain and continuously improve the environmental management system. You will also be responsible for executing processes, procedures, and controls to ensure environmental compliance and investigating and identifying environmental issues.
What will you do?
- Provide high quality advice on water management regulations, permitting pathways, and risk mitigation strategies
- Dive into wetland compliance and auditing, ensuring we're always in tip-top shape with our procedures and environmental legislation
- Investigate issues and finding solutions to ensure compliance with municipal and federal water and wetland legislation
- Champion environmental compliance to enhance our ISO 14001-aligned environmental management system
- Preparing high quality scientific and technical reports to support regulatory permitting and environmental compliance issues.
- Share your expertise! You'll provide valuable environmental advice to our internal teams, helping them set green objectives
- Craft compelling technical reports, translating complex environmental data into clear, actionable insights
- Become a trusted liaison, fostering strong connections between our business areas and regulatory bodies
- Lead exciting environmental projects and studies, from procurement to ensuring top-notch quality
- Stay ahead of the curve, researching and developing new environmental practices and emergency preparedness plans

Qualifications :
University Degree in Sciences in Environmental Science, Biology, Agrology, Botany, Ecology, Conservation or Natural Resource ManagementA minimum of 6 years of experience with a degree (or 8 years with a diploma) in areas such as wetland management, Water Act, assessment and permitting, conservation and management of environmental resources, environmental regulation and enforcementAssets :
Registration as a professional in an environmental discipline is considered an asset, such as;Designation as a Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) or Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.) or eligible for designation
Wetland Authenticating Professional (eligible to sign-off on wetland regulatory documents in Alberta)Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist (QAES) capable of supporting federal and provincial regulatory applicationsSkills required for success :
Experience with environmental regulatory strategies and industry best practicesExperience preparing or reviewing Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Evaluation, Biophysical Impact Assessment, Environmental Risk Assessment, ECO Plans and Erosion and Sediment Control PlansLeads all aspects of environmental regulatory management, including strategic planning, securing diverse federal, provincial, and municipal approvals, and ensuring rigorous compliance through effective monitoring, reporting, and documentation. Possesses deep knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, standards, guidelines, and best management practicesCompetency in analytical and critical thinking, with knowledge of incident investigation, and risk assessment and managementDemonstrated relationship-building and conflict-management skills, able to present required outputs in a compelling manner and influence decision makersExperience conducting compliance inspections and auditsExperience navigating the provincial Digital Regulatory Assurance System (DRAS)Working in cross-functional teams in large, complex organizationsStrong written communication skills, capable of developing documents ranging from technical to generalAbility to represent the City of Edmonton in a professional, honest, respectful, and safe mannerStrong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and facilitate meetings and activities with internal staff and external agenciesAbility to work outdoors for extended periods in unfavorable weather conditionsAbility to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment where work responsibilities depend on team cooperation / collaborationData management abilitiesResearch and problem-solving skills to gather required information, make decisions, and develop recommendationsProficiency with Google Suite and Microsoft OfficeValid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent)Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this positionYou will be required to arrange your own transportation for use while on City business. Hours of Work : 33.75 hours per week
Salary Range : $51.171 - $65.301 Hourly $90,150.51 - $115,044.04 Annually
Salary ranges are in the process of being updated in accordance with the recently ratified collective agreement between the City and CSU 52 will be forthcoming shortly.
