Environmental Coordinator (12 Month Fixed Term)

Position Description:

The Environmental Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of the Hemlo Mine environmental compliance programs and environmental management systems to meet performance requirements. The Environmental Coordinator responsibility is the ongoing identification, assessment, prioritization, and management of environmental risks, including legislative requirements, through the development, implementation, monitoring, and continual improvement of a cost effective and efficient environmental management system.

General responsibilities include administration of all programs and plans that may have an impact on the natural environment, such as wastewater management, surface and ground water quality monitoring programs, oversite of waste management (hazardous and non-hazardous), providing direction regarding hazardous product management, air emissions management, and closure/reclamation plan administration.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the development and implementation of environmental monitoring programs including air quality, water quality, noise, waste, and biodiversity.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and coordination of mine rehabilitation activities.
  • Implement and maintain the Hemlo Environmental Management system in compliance with Corporate, Regional and ISO-14001 guidance.
  • Coordinate ongoing environmental data collection programs and lead internal data management.
  • Provide field support, including inspections and sampling, for environmental programs as required.
  • Provide advice and assistance to the operation and contractors in the interpretation of company environmental systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, regulations and operational projects and permits.
  • Respond effectively to environmental incidents, including spills, to mitigate impacts and ensure compliance with emergency response protocols.
  • Coordinate with external environmental consultants on baseline data collection as required.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory reports, permits, and compliance documentation accurately and on time.
  • Liaison for the company with all municipal, provincial, and federal regulatory agencies
  • and communities of interest.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in an environmental discipline
  • Critical thinking skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Strong sense of accountability and ability to execute tactical work in consideration of strategic operational and closure goals.
  • Strong understanding of applicable environmental legislation and regulatory framework.
  • Is comfortable with working alone in the field.
  • Knowledge of computer skills and data processing.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make informed recommendations.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and regulatory authorities.
  • Strong prioritization, organization, and reasoning skills.
