Job summary

CST Canada Coal Limited is seeking an Environmental Leader at the mine site to direct development and continuous improvement of environmental programs in accordance with regulatory requirements. You will lead a team and manage projects to ensure environmental compliance and stewardship across operations.

The role requires five years of direct environmental compliance experience in an industrial/mining setting, with strong leadership and regulatory knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Plan, direct, and coordinate the development and implementation of environmental programs in compliance with all provincial and federal regulations, acts, and approvals.

• Coordinate all aspects of resource use, pollution prevention, waste management, environmental health, risk assessment, and employee involvement.
• Analyze and report environmental performance to internal management and regulators (e.g., Alberta Energy Regulator, Environment Canada).
• Prepare provincial and federal environmental monitoring reports and lead in-house regulatory communications.
• Manage environmental projects, including staff and budgets; coordinate activities.
• Develop, mentor, and train staff in environmental compliance and company responsibilities.

Detailed Job Description

PURPOSE

This position is responsible for providing leadership in the development, implementation and continuous improvement of environmental programs in accordance with regulatory requirements so as to ensure that CST Coal environmental planning is adequately reviewed, implemented and communicated in all aspects of the operation, resulting in facilities being operated in while maintained environmental compliance and stewardship.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Reporting to the General Manager, the incumbent is directly responsible for 6 full-time technicians/technologists and various project personnel as required.

Responsibilities & Performance Standards

• Plans organize, direct, control, and coordinate the development and implementation of environmental programs in compliance with all provincial and federal regulations, acts, and approvals.
• Coordinates activities for water and domestic wastewater treatment; and supervision of water works operators.
• Coordinates all aspects of resource use, pollution prevention, waste management, environmental health, risk assessment, and employee involvement.
• Analyzes and reports environmental performance corporately to internal management and externally to provincial and federal regulatory bodies (Alberta Energy Regulator, Environment Canada, etc.).
• Prepares provincial and federal environmental monitoring reports, assuming the lead responsibility with the company, to internal management and external regulators.
• Manages environmental projects, including managing staff and budgets and coordinating activities.
• Development, mentors, and training staff of all levels in environmental compliance and company responsibilities
• Investigates environmental incidents, develops and implements after action plans.
• Provide support for regulatory applications and adherence to existing approvals.

Additional Duties

• Responsible for providing technical support/advice in the form of formal/informal presentations or reports to other Departmental staff, Managers, Senior Executive, Government, NGOs, and the general public as required.
• Responsible for performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education

A minimum advanced college diploma in an environmental discipline with a four-year degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or related discipline being preferred.

Experience

A minimum of Five years of direct, environmental compliance experience in an industrial setting, preferably in mining; coupled with significant team leadership experience is required. A suitable combination of education and experience may be considered. Demonstrable project management experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements

The incumbent needs to be able to:

• handle loads over 20 kg. in weight.
• maintain a license/certification and operate a vehicle requiring a Class 5 license including ATV’s, i.e., quad, snowmobile.
• regularly engage in physical exertion, i.e., shovel, lift and/or carry heavy materials.
• concentrate for over 60 consecutive minutes.
• work in environmental extremes for over 60 consecutive minutes,
• sit for over 60 consecutive minutes.
• listen to quiet sounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent works at the CST Coal Mine Site facility and will be required to travel by motorized vehicle, ATV or on foot, CST Coal’s coal leases as a regular function of the job. The shift schedule is an EDO schedule (5x2 / 4x3 rotation) averaging 40-hours per week. Overtime and being on stand-by or ready for callouts may be required due to the nature of the work.

He/she is in an office setting up 90% of the time and outdoors 10% of the time and may be exposed to fire, smoke, fumes, odors, or chemicals associated with laboratory analysis and rough and steep terrain. Travel may be required outside the work area in order to attend conferences, courses, or meetings.

As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to comply with pre and post employment drug and alcohol testing as per the Drug and Alcohol Policy. As required, personal protective equipment will include the use of an approved hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots, hearing protection, CSA approved respiratory protection, protective clothing, and gloves.
