Job description

Environment, Health & Safety Consultant

Location: Toronto, ON, CA

The Environmental Health and Safety Consultant acts as a subject matter expert with respect to all Environment Health and Safety (EHS) activities within the organization. The incumbent is responsible to consult with business units, develop and execute EHS programs, lead the maintenance of EHS Management Systems, and provide reactive EHS emergency response support. The Environmental Health & Safety Consultant also conducts proactive and reactive EHS inspections (within office and construction and industrial sites) making recommendations to minimize or reduce EHS hazards and improve EHS performance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conducts health and safety inspections within office, construction, or industrial environments.
  2. Conducts data analysis, prepares various reports, proposals and recommendations.
  3. Leads, manages and/or supports multiple client assignments and associated projects including those involving internal and external resources.
  4. Supports return to work activities; liaises with the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development for reporting requirements, work refusals, complaints, and investigations.
  5. Liaises with the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MoECP) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) contact for issues related to spills or environmental compliance requirements.
  6. Develops, implements and monitors effective EHS systems including associated programs and procedures.
  7. Acts as a change agent to drive continual improvement in EHS systems, processes, and technology.
  8. Delivers quality and on-time completion of health and safety projects.
  9. May act as EHS subject matter expert on corporate or divisional projects.
  10. Oversees environmental management programs such as waste management, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) management program, hazardous waste management program, and the recycling program.
  11. Develops and delivers training for employees on EHS programs as required.
  12. Keeps current with health and safety best practices, legislation changes, new developments and trends. Monitors, updates, and verifies organization compliance with applicable safety and environmental legislation.
  13. Maintains EHS management systems (ISO 14001, 45001) through audits, continual improvement of systems, employee engagement, operational controls, and risk assessments.
  14. Participates in emergency response activities for environmental (spills) or health and safety incidents. Manages incident investigation (site assessment, interviews, reporting, etc.) to completion.
  15. Provides after-hours standby support on a rotational basis.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor / Undergraduate degree in Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or related field.
  2. Five (5) or more years of progressive experience in Environment, Health & Safety, or industrial hygienist related work.
  3. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation preferred.
  4. Post Graduate Certificate/ Diploma in Environment, Health and Safety is an asset.
  5. Knowledge and experience with the development, implementation and monitoring of an EHS management system.
  6. Thorough understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) Legislation and Regulations, Environmental Protection Act, Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development and Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks practices and procedures.
  7. Knowledge of return-to-work initiatives.
  8. In-depth understanding of utility policies and practices, Rule Book and other government and bylaws pertaining to distribution equipment and personnel.
  9. Demonstrates an innovative approach to problem solving and continual improvement.
  10. Demonstrates an active commitment to safety.
  11. Excellent analytical and communication skills.
  12. Results driven and strong organizational/ time management skills.
  13. Strong ability to influence and persuade others.

Toronto Hydro has introduced a Hybrid Work Arrangement. This position allows for remote work up to three days per week, based on business needs. Employees will be required to come onsite on those days when they are involved in activities that they or their leader feel are better conducted in person. You are expected to live in Ontario and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.
