Job description

Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

The EHS Manager is the key strategic and tactical member of the growing Canadian (AB & ON) business, reporting to the General Manager and situated in Camrose, AB. This role will attract candidates with 10 years of demonstrated success in driving organizational and behavioural change in industrial and manufacturing environments. You will leverage a sense of urgency, an analytical and data driven approach, with serious coaching, training and observational skills to take responsibility for the incremental growth of PERMA-PIPE Canada’s safety culture. In addition, this hands-on role will lead the production teams in compliance through being on the floor and in the operational environment, advising and coaching towards continual improvement.

LOCATION:

Camrose, AB

The role is situated in Camrose, AB, with occasional travel (roughly 25%) required within Alberta, as well Ottawa, ON and Houston, TX. There are no camp visits or remote travel required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

With the goal of building a 24/7 safety culture and create a best-in-class operation in the Canadian market, the EHS Manager will be responsible for:

Strategy

  • Develop country EHS objectives in line with the Country/ Region and Global objectives
  • Ensures the business has an effective EHS plan to improve performance and to develop a competent and motivated EHS organization

Compliance

  • Lead internal and external audits and ensure that any actions are implemented and closed in a timely manner
  • Monitor all exemptions and MOC requests, ensuring they are correctly documented and that the appropriate levels of approval are requested
  • Ensure strong compliance with SOP’s and various other operational standards and manage the exemption process
  • Accept full authority to take any necessary action to maintain overall safe practices and procedures, including the authority to cease an unsafe operating procedure

Program Management

  • Management of all aspects of WCB/WSIB claims management
  • Coordination of inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities with departments.
  • The development of safety policies and procedures and all additional safety plans for the business
  • Ensure strong compliance with SOP’s and various other operational standards and manages the exemption process
  • Involve appropriate management in any accident or failure events, ensuring they are properly reported and investigated in a timely manner

Employee Communications

  • Acting as the subject matter expert for country specific EHS knowledge, the EHS Manager ensures that alerts and program information is effectively delivered via multiple mediums
  • Implement information flow and data publications to ensure required levels of management are informed of all activities related to compliance with company safety policies and bulletins

Training

  • Develop and deliver the orientation of new employees with safety instruction including, but not limited to Dangerous Goods, WHMIS, driver, warehouse, and maintenance personnel education

Auditing

  • Lead internal and external audits and ensure any actions are fully implemented and closed in a timely manner
  • Monitor and measure effectiveness of all safety programs and documentation required as part of compliance with Occupational Health & Safety in multiple provincial locations
  • Monitors compliance with EHS training objectives to address operational specific risks and ensure compliance with EHS standards

QUALIFICATIONS:

Background and Education

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant EHS experience, preferably working in a manufacturing environment
  • 5 years of management experience
  • CRSP, CHSC or MSO designation preferred

Required Experience

  • An exhaustive background in Federal, Alberta and Ontario Occupational Health & Safety regulations, safety codes and legislation
  • Understand and have complete knowledge of all Federal, Provincial rules and regulations pertaining to safety codes and Occupational Health and Safety rules
  • Direct experience assessing training needs, creating training materials to fulfill those needs, and then delivering the effective training
  • Experience in research, analysis, interpretation and implementation of safety regulations, standards, and best practices

Demonstrated Skills

  • The ability to create high quality presentations using a variety of technologies (e.g. WebEx, Microsoft PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Advanced written and oral communication competences
  • Demonstrated ability to train, coach, evaluate, and improve others
  • The capability to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments, key business partners, and other stakeholders
  • An underlying strong work ethic and positive team attitude
