Job description

Area: Editing and Academic Publishing

MDPI is the largest open access publisher in the world, with over 400 journals in disciplines ranging from the humanities to life sciences. Our mission is to foster open science and scientific exchange by delivering high-quality peer-reviewed research to scholars around the globe. The English Editing Department is integral to this mission, ensuring that all of MDPI’s manuscripts are published with clarity, consistency, and grammatical accuracy.

The Role: English Editor

We are looking for meticulous and dedicated individuals with a strong grasp of the English language and the nuances of academic writing to support scholars publishing their research. English Editors support academic research by editing the language of peer-reviewed papers to publication standards.

Successful applicants undergo a probation period during which in-house training is provided by an experienced editor, after which there are opportunities to diversify the role and gain expertise in new areas.

This is a full-time, in-office position based in North York, Toronto.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit scholarly articles submitted to MDPI journals to a publication-ready standard.
  • Apply knowledge of the English language and the context of the manuscript to make the English clear, consistent, and grammatically correct, communicating the author’s message without changing their voice unnecessarily.
  • Ensure manuscripts align with MDPI’s house rules.
  • Meet tight deadlines and hit targets with a high degree of consistency.
  • Take on additional roles, such as training colleagues within and outside of the department and editing corporate material.

Experience and Skills

Essential criteria:

  • A bachelor’s degree in any subject.
  • Expert knowledge of the English language.
  • Experience editing, translating, or publishing.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Impeccable attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an international team.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Professional experience in academic research or publishing.
  • A master’s, PhD, or equivalent qualification.
  • Familiarity with LaTeX.
  • Experience working in an office environment.

What We Offer

  • Training and Bonuses
    • Focused in-house training in editing scholarly content according to MDPI’s conventions by experienced editors.
    • A 5% pay increase for non-PhD holders or 10% pay increase for PhD holders after passing the probation period.
    • Performance-based quarterly bonuses.
    • Clear progression pathways.
  • Competitive Health Insurance Packages
    • Comprehensive health insurance that covers aspects of dental work, vision care, and prescription costs, as well as extras such as physiotherapy, psychotherapy, massage and wellness services, and more.
  • Convenient Transportation Links
    • Office based in North York with convenient access to the Yonge-Sheppard TTC station.
    • Ten minutes by subway from the Finch Go Bus terminal and thirty minutes by subway from Union Station.

Application Process

Interested candidate are asked to submit their CV and cover letter. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and asked to complete two editing tests. If successful, candidates will be invited to an interview, which is the final stage of the application process.
