Nature of the Position

The District of Sechelt is offering a summer student opportunity to join the engineering team. The District’s engineering division delivers a range of municipal services including municipal utilities, asset management, transportation infrastructure, subdivision and development control, capital project delivery, engineering operations and maintenance. The ideal candidate will be an engineering student, preferably from the Sunshine Coast region. This technical position reports to the Manager of Engineering Services.

This role supports the District’s engineering functions, including tasks involving the implementation of documents related to inspection, design, construction, maintenance and operation of engineering projects, as well as data collection, project support and technical writing.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Applicants must be under the age of 30 years old.
  2. Legally able to work in Canada.
  3. Completed their first year towards a degree in the field of Civil Engineering (or equivalent education and experience).
  4. A valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract are also required.
  5. Knowledge of engineering principles, theories and practices related to roads, wastewater, and sewer infrastructure.
  6. Ability to assess engineering problems and provide potential solutions based on thorough research and analysis.
  7. Proficiency in MS Office.
  8. Professional, responsive, and positive work attitude.
  9. Effective communication and prioritization skills.
  10. Ability to organize and schedule work independently.
  11. Capability of establishing working relationships within the District of Sechelt’s services.
  12. Experience with surveying and equipment would be considered an asset.
  13. Experience using ESRI ArcGIS, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D is advantageous.
  14. Basic knowledge of Master Municipal Construction Document (MMCD) would be advantageous.

Working Conditions

This is a temporary, full-time unionized position within the BCGEU. The expected duration of this position is from mid-May to late August 2025. The wage for the position is set at $24.96 per hour plus 9.8% of the straight-time pay in lieu of scheduled vacations, paid holidays, health and welfare benefits and other paid leave. Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The District supports employment equity in accordance with the Human Rights Code of BC.
