Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customers include top public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders across sectors. The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing. We have over 1200 colleagues in more than 80 countries, with few office-based roles. Teams meet a few times a year worldwide to align on strategy and execution.

We are hiring an Engineering Manager to expand the MAAS team. Our mission with MAAS ("Metal as a Service") is to provide optimal solutions for building and managing private bare-metal infrastructure, offering a cloud-style API for physical server provisioning, network configuration, and storage. We seek engineering managers with experience in high-quality software development and high-performance team leadership, with deep familiarity with Linux on physical servers, Linux storage, and data center networking.

MAAS components cover the entire software stack: from hardware detection and provisioning to the web interface, API, and CLI. Our most effective engineers understand all these layers and can anticipate the impacts of design decisions in a complex distributed system.

At Canonical, you should have a solid technical background, but your main responsibility is to lead an effective team and develop your colleagues. You will help them grow, deliver outstanding work, find satisfaction, and collaborate well. Technical leadership and software engineering experience are prerequisites. You will lead, challenge, and develop engineers, influence culture positively, facilitate technical delivery, and work on strategy and execution. You will also collaborate across engineering teams like cloud-init, LXD, and cloud offerings.

The ideal candidate will have leadership qualities, deep Linux knowledge, and the ability to solve challenging distributed systems problems.

Location: This is a remote position available in EMEA or the Americas.

The role involves:

  1. Leading a distributed engineering team in your time zone.
  2. Talent development through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and career planning.
  3. Managing expectations with other teams, management, and stakeholders.
  4. Advancing modern software development practices.
  5. Participating in code and architecture reviews.
  6. Engaging with broader teams, open source community, and partners.
  7. Traveling internationally 4-6 weeks per year.

We seek candidates with:

  • Strong academic record from high school and university.
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical field.
  • Confidence to share ideas and exchange feedback respectfully.
  • A track record of exceeding expectations.
  • Leadership and mentorship skills.
  • Passion for technology, demonstrated through projects.
  • Work ethic and confidence to collaborate with motivated colleagues.
  • Excellent English communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
  • Interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, accountability.
  • Appreciation for diversity and cultural sensitivity.
  • Self-motivation and thoughtfulness.
  • Result-oriented mindset with a drive to meet commitments.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year, up to two weeks each.
  • Knowledge of modern Linux cloud technologies, networking, storage, containers, and K8s.
  • Experience programming in Python and Go.
  • Strong interest in developing people and leadership experience.

Nice-to-have skills include experience with modern web frameworks like React, Angular, Svelte, or Vue using Typescript.

We offer:

  • A distributed work environment with biannual in-person sprints.
  • USD 2,000 annual learning and development budget.
  • Annual compensation review.
  • Recognition rewards, holiday leave, maternity/paternity leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities to travel and meet colleagues.
