Job description

About Proof
Proof is a high-growth company transforming the legal tech space. Our best-in-class platform is trusted by thousands of law firms to streamline legal operations and drive efficiency. We're growing rapidly and looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to help scale our technology, lead a high-performing team, and make a meaningful impact on the legal industry.

What You’ll Do
We're looking for a technical leader who combines deep engineering expertise with empathetic people management. You’ll lead a remote team across backend, frontend, and full-stack, while contributing directly to architecture, delivery, and product direction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a high-impact engineering team, fostering a culture of quality, ownership, and continuous improvement.

  • Roll up your sleeves to write and review code, guide architecture decisions, and unblock critical paths.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, and other stakeholders to define, scope, and execute ambitious initiatives.

  • Drive technical excellence through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on mentorship.

  • Set and deliver on team-level OKRs aligned with business priorities.

  • Proactively identify and address gaps in testing, monitoring, performance, and developer workflows.

  • Hire, onboard, and retain top-tier engineering talent.

  • Bring clarity and direction to fast-moving and ambiguous contexts.

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in technical leadership or management.

  • Proficiency with modern backend and frontend stacks (e.g., Go, Ruby, TypeScript, React).

  • A hands-on mindset—you’re comfortable diving into code or system design when needed.

  • A track record of delivering complex projects end-to-end.

  • Clear, calm, and thoughtful communication, even under pressure.

  • A user-focused, pragmatic approach to problem-solving.

  • A bias for action, with strong technical judgment and leadership maturity.

Nice to Have

  • Startup experience, ideally at the Series A/B stage.

  • Experience shipping polished, performant UIs using React and TypeScript.

  • Familiarity with tools like GraphQL, Storybook, Playwright, and CI/CD pipelines.

  • Deep understanding of frontend performance metrics (Web Vitals, Lighthouse) and optimization strategies.

  • Experience building and maintaining design systems or component libraries.

  • Commitment to accessibility best practices.

  • Experience with observability, developer experience tooling, or message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ).

  • Background in compliance-heavy industries (legal, healthcare, finance).

  • Strong product instincts and comfort navigating trade-offs between speed, UX, and tech debt.

Perks & Benefits

  • Remote-first: work from anywhere in Canada

  • Competitive salary: $160,000–$195,000 CAD, based on experience

  • Flexible vacation and time-off policy

  • Company-provided equipment

  • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and disability coverage
