Job description

Engineering Manager – Building Materials

Our client, a leader in high-end building materials, is looking for an Engineering Manager to join their growing team in Calgary. This individual will lead and manage key engineering functions and become a critical driver in advancing innovation, efficiency, and compliance within the industry.

Responsibilities:
Product Development (R&D):
  • Lead the research and development of new products, from conceptualization through to production, ensuring that they meet market demands and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee R&D activities to ensure alignment with corporate objectives and milestones, collaborating with Sales and Marketing to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Coordinate with external design and fabrication vendors to support product development and testing.
  • Design efficient plant layouts to ensure Lean Manufacturing workflow, minimize material handling, and enhance productivity (e.g., cellular layouts or hybrid layouts that improve material flow and reduce unnecessary movements).
  • Drive the development and implementation of engineering processes that improve production capabilities and reduce waste (using Six Sigma and lean methodologies).
  • Implement regular Gemba walks and Kaizen events to foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging workers to identify problems and propose solutions.
Regulatory & Compliance:
  • Lead the Regulatory and Compliance Specialist to ensure the company’s products are compliant with all applicable regulatory standards, building codes, and industry best practices.
  • Ensure audits are conducted regularly and stay current with building code changes.
  • Collaborate with the sales team to meet sales objectives in terms of regulations.
  • Ensure all thermal and physical testing certifications are achieved.
Quality Assurance:
  • Ensure the organization develops, implements, and maintains a formal Quality Management System to standardize corporate quality processes and practices.
  • Work closely with the Quality Lead to ensure all products meet the highest standards of quality and comply with both internal and external quality requirements.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing).
  • Engineering status with APEGA.
  • 10+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment; experience in building materials is an asset.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams, managing complex projects, and driving innovation.
  • Strong understanding of R&D, Product Data Management, Industrial Engineering, and Quality Management.
