Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Lab Tech II builds engineering prototypes, maintains psychrometric test cells and lab conditioning equipment, and performs unit modifications in and out of the psychrometric test cells to support short- and long-term research and development of eco-friendly heating and cooling solutions. Additionally, the Lab Tech operates psychrometric test cells and airflow measuring stations according to established standards and procedures to support sustaining and NPD projects. This position requires minimal supervision.

Essential Functions

  1. Follow instructions from Project Engineers, Designers, Senior Technicians, and Engineering Services Managers.
  2. Mentor Engineering Lab Tech I personnel and collaborate with them.
  3. Set up and install equipment in test cells following processes and procedures, including compliance with regulatory standards.
  4. Read and interpret sheet metal drawings and wiring diagrams; develop wire charts.
  5. Perform silver brazing of copper and dissimilar metals such as brass and steel.
  6. Conduct soft soldering of copper and copper to brass.
  7. Identify major components of heat pump and fan coil systems for fit, form, and function.
  8. Assemble units and make modifications with minimal supervision.
  9. Maintain a clean work environment following established guidelines and 5S principles.
  10. Work effectively with competing demands and use instrumentation software and hardware, including AS400 Product Inquiry and Product Structure Inquiry screens.
  11. Operate forklifts and hold certifications for LOTO Electrical Safety.
  12. Report unsafe conditions and promote a safe working environment.
  13. Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Skills & Abilities

  • Associate degree or certification in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 3-5 years of HVAC technical experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Database software (AS400), Microsoft Office, LabVIEW, and National Instruments hardware.
  • Certifications including LOTO Electrical Safety, CCG Powered Industrial Truck, and Refrigerant Handlers are required; industry licenses are a plus.
  • Basic refrigeration and electrical concepts, including understanding of the refrigeration cycle, pressure-temperature relationships, and basic electrical principles.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, sheet metal tools, and motorized tools.
