Job summary

Westmoreland Coal Co. is seeking a student engineer for a four-month term starting January 2027, based at the Estevan Mine in Saskatchewan. You will assist with data analysis, drone and surveying tasks, and the preparation of CAD drawings reflecting current site conditions.

You will collaborate with senior engineers on mine planning, 3D modeling, and reclamation planning, while developing skills in environmental sampling and data quality control.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a civil, geological, or mining engineering program.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and AutoCAD.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Calculate and distribute daily reports on dragline volumes, stockpile volumes, and other production metrics.
  • Work with datasets, performing data entry, analysis, tracking, and quality control.
  • Support drone flight operations to capture imagery, survey data, and site information as needed.
  • Analyze drone data and assist with design work for infrastructure, reclamation, and dragline planning.
  • Create and update AutoCAD drawings, maps, and engineering plans reflecting site conditions.
  • Assist with environmental sampling, inspections, piezometer readings, and water quality testing.
  • Develop and conduct mine planning and pit audits across the site.
  • Assist Trimble surveying by collecting field points and staking locations for reclamation planning.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers on map development, 3D modeling, dragline design, and topsoil planning.
  • Contribute to additional engineering and mine planning initiatives as required.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Calculate and distribute daily reports on dragline uncovered volumes, stockpile volumes, and other production metrics.
  • Work with a variety of datasets, performing data entry, analysis, tracking, and quality control.
  • Support drone flight operations to capture aerial imagery, survey data, and site information when required.
  • Analyze drone data and perform design work for infrastructure development, reclamation planning, and dragline operations.
  • Create and update AutoCAD drawings, maps, and engineering plans to reflect current site conditions.
  • Assist with weekly and monthly environmental sampling and auditing, including environmental inspections, piezometer readings, and water quality sampling.
  • Develop, conduct, and compile, various mine planning and pit audits across the site.
  • Assist with Trimble surveying activities by collecting field points and staking locations for reclamation and infrastructure planning.
  • Work alongside senior engineers on various mine planning activities, such as map development, 3D leveling and modelling, dragline design and planning, and topsoil planning.
  • Contribute to additional engineering and mine planning initiatives as required.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a civil, geological, or mining engineering program.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and AutoCAD.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Work Conditions

This position is primarily based in the office, with some field work required. The amount and nature of field work may vary from day to day based on operational needs, projects, and priorities.

Transportation & Accommodations

The Estevan Mine is located approximately 12 km from the city of Estevan and 16 km from the town of Bienfait. The successful candidate will be responsible for their own accommodations and transportation.
