Main Purpose & Function

The Public Space Engineering Assistant III is part of a team that implements public space improvements throughout the City. The position is responsible for a variety of duties including field work, communicating with the public, public space design work, and other duties related to public space projects.

The position reports to the Project Manager I, Design and Partner Projects team; and frequently interacts with a wide range of internal City of Vancouver employees and external contacts including contractors, volunteers and the general public.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development and maintenance of project documentation: project charter, cost tracking and reports
  • Interprets engineering drawings and work packages ; verify technical information and document field observations; retrieves and interprets field observations and studies.
  • Coordinates field implementation of parklets and plazas, including liaising with installation crews, traffic management plans, notifying internal and external agencies, scheduling work and responding to questions in the field during installation.
  • Performs field work for before, after, and during construction, as well as site visits involving conditions assessment and maintenance prioritization of existing parklets
  • Inspects that installations are implemented according to approved landscape/transportation drawings.
  • Creates high-level landscape diagrams informed by site visits and site measurements .
  • Communicates with the public, community groups, stakeholders and internal departments
  • Prepares presentations, plans and graphic materials.
  • Performs routine clerical duties, filing and maintenance of data files and assisting the Street Activities team as required.
  • Analyze public surveys results to informpublic space design.
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent in Technical school supplemented by technical courses in drafting, graphics, Civil Engineering or other equivalent area of study related to the work, such as, Environmental Design, Landscape Architecture and Transportation plus considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of engineering mathematics and familiarity with elementary engineering practices
  • Working knowledge of MS Office software, AutoCAD, the Adobe Creative Cloud, and SketchUp
  • Working knowledge of the City's public space and transportation policies and regulations
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with little or no supervision, and meet tight time lines in a multi task environment
  • Ability to understand the purpose and intent of survey data, and to prepare accurate and effective graphic presentations.
  • Strong research and investigation skills; demonstrated ability to summarize data in an accurate written format; assist in the preparation of a variety of technical reports
  • Interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with staff and the public
  • Ability to read and interpret landscape/transportation plans and designs
  • Ability to perform analysis work
  • Ability to manage contracts and work effectively with third party contractors
  • Ability to perform simple drafting
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather

Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work a hybrid work week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.
