Wehave a unique opportunity for a full-time permanentWater Treatment Plant (WTP) Process Engineer to join our Water Services, Engineering & Technical Services teamat theWater Treatment Plants- Rossdale and E.L. Smith - in Edmonton, AB.

WTP Process Engineer – Role Summary

The Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Process Engineer is responsible for optimizing the performance of water treatment processes, with a focus on improving plant effluent quality in a safe, cost-effective, and efficient manner. This includes ensuring that treatment processes operate under optimal conditions, final water quality meets regulatory standards, and that process upsets are resolved promptly.

In addition, the WTP Process Engineer oversees process-related assets at the Edmonton Water Treatment Plants (Rossdale and E.L. Smith), as well as associated reservoirs and booster stations. The role provides specialized engineering support to Operations, Maintenance, and Capital Projects, ensuring the quality of process designs, engineering drawings, and standards. Responsibilities also include managing process changes, conducting investigations and troubleshooting, and delivering timely and accurate engineering plans.

The WTP Process Engineer also collaborates with internal and external stakeholders and provides process engineering expertise to regional and commercial services units.

What you’d be responsible for

In the role of WTP Process Engineer, you are accountable to the Process Development & Support Manager and will have the following key accountabilities (but are not limited to these) :

Process Optimization & Performance Monitoring

  • Monitor and evaluate water treatment process performance; provide operational support and recommendations for process adjustments.
  • Conduct experiments and testing to optimize treatment processes when practical and cost-effective.
  • Support compliance with potable water standards, codes, and legislation at Edmonton Water Treatment Plants.
  • Participate in technical committees focused on minimizing environmental impact from WTP operations.

Engineering Design & Technical Support

  • Apply sound engineering principles to resolve operational issues and minimize disruptions.
  • Provide technical support for investigations and troubleshooting; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Review and ensure accuracy of process engineering documentation (e.g., P&IDs, PFDs, mass balance models).
  • Evaluate Management of Change (MOC) requests; implement approved technical solutions.
  • Provide process engineering expertise to project managers, including design, specification, and procurement support.
  • Support the development of balanced asset and capital plans for process / chemical systems at water treatment plants and reservoirs.

Standards, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Develop, implement, and review process engineering procedures to ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain and update process engineering standards and specifications to mitigate operational risks.

Cross-Site Support

  • Provide technical support to other EPCOR facilities as needed, with the potential for travel.

Knowledge, Education, and Training Requirements

  • Education : Bachelor of Science degree in Process or Chemical Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution.A degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering may be considered with demonstrated experience in water treatment plant engineering.
  • Professional Designation : Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Technical Knowledge and Skills(preferred) : Process data analysis and process controlHydraulic design and modelingEngineering economicsProcess piping designPump selection and designFluid mechanicsMaterials engineering and analysis

Technical Skills

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex technical data and make timely, informed decisions.
  • Proficient in data analysis and trending tools to support process optimization and troubleshooting.
  • Experienced in Process / Chemical engineering design, with a proven ability to break down complex problems and develop effective, practical solutions.
  • Capable of producing engineering designs that meet safety, performance, and business value requirements.
  • Authorized to review and stamp engineering drawings and technical documents, as required.
  • Recognized as a subject matter expert in Process / Chemical engineering and relevant water treatment standards (e.g., NSF / ANSI 60 and 61).

Preferred Qualifications (Assets)

The following qualifications are considered strong assets and will enhance a candidate’s suitability for the role :

  • Project Management experience, including cost estimation, cost-benefit analysis, and work schedule development.
  • Process Safety experience, such as process risk management and hazard analysis.
  • Advanced academic credentials, such as a Master’s or PhD in Chemical / Process or Civil / Environmental Engineering.

Other important facts about this job

This is a professional level position that typically works Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). Please note you may need to do some travel to other facilities to provide technical support as needed within EPCOR.

  • A requirement of working for EPCOR is that you are at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma (or equivalent secondary school) and legally entitled to work in Canada. (A copy of a valid work permit may be required.)
  • If you are considered for the position, clearance on all applicable background checks (which may include criminal, identity, educational, and / or credit) and professional reference checks is required. Some EPCOR positions require an enhanced level of background assessment, which is dictated by law. These positions require advanced criminal record checks that must also be conducted from time to time after commencement of employment.
  • A technical / practical assessment may be administered during the selection process and this exercise will be used as a part of the selection criterion.
  • To meet the physical demands required of some positions, candidates must be in good physical condition and willing to work in all weather conditions. Clearance on pre-placement medical and drug and alcohol testing may be required.
