Emera Newfoundland & Labrador (ENL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Emera Inc. (EMA- TXS), is responsible for operating and maintaining the 500-megawatt HVdc Maritime Link Project. The Maritime Link transmits energy between the island of Newfoundland to Nova Scotia. With office locations in both provinces, ENL is committed to ensuring that the Maritime Link transmits clean, renewable energy for Nova Scotia. The Maritime Link consists of 400km of overland transmission lines, HVdc converters and related site assets and two 170km submarine cables crossing the Cabot Strait from Cape Ray, Newfoundland to Point Aconi, Nova Scotia.

We are currently looking for an Engineer, Marine Assets to join our team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering, you will be a key member of the Operations team, ensuring the reliability and performance of key energy infrastructure.

This role is the Engineering lead for all aspects of ENL’s Marine Asset Management Framework. The assets of focus are the submarine cables, the cable protection system, the transition sites including Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD), HVdc land cables, HVdc cable terminations, and auxiliary equipment.

Key Elements Of This Role Include

  • Leading ENL’s submarine cable and protection inspection survey from procurement through execution.
  • Working with contractors and consultants to ensure any ocean-going campaigns meet all operability, safety, quality, construction and regulatory requirements.
  • Overseeing inspection survey results and conclusions. Ensure related reporting activities required by regulators are timely and complete.
  • Ensuring historical marine survey data is organized, secure and accessible using appropriate software systems.
  • Documenting, assessing and managing risks, mitigation plans, and contingency plans.
  • Supporting other marine and HVdc cables activities such as environmental monitoring, climate adaptation and resilience initiatives.
  • Liaising with stakeholders such as fishers, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Transport Canada and other regulatory bodies.
  • Keeping abreast of industry knowledge and advancements in the local and international marine and HVdc cables industry and other relevant technical fields.
  • In addition to marine focused activities, support multi-discipline engineering functions including:
  • Managing operational and capital projects from concept development through budgeting and the approval process and onto completion.
  • Developing, maintaining and improving existing operational and engineering processes and implementing cost reduction initiatives.
  • Supervising external consultants and contractors.

What Will Make You Successful

As the ideal candidate you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Ocean, Naval, Mechanical or Civil) You are a full member (or eligible for membership) with Engineers Nova Scotia, and/or The Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Minimum of five (5) years related experience. Experience and familiarity with submarine cables or other subsea installations is an asset.
  • You are a self-starter with excellent organizational and analytical skills who can function effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to personal development are required.
  • You will be required to travel between Maritime Link facilities and offices periodically, and occasionally to participate on offshore campaigns.
  • You are periodically required to be available for after-hours consultation (via phone/remote access) and responding to reliability or other events that may occasionally arise.
  • You must have a valid driver’s license.
