Position Overview
As a member of the Mine Technical Services (MTS) and Projects team, the Engineer in Training, Mining will report to the Superintendent, Mine Technical Services and work a two (2) weeks on, two (2) weeks off rotation at the Ekati mine site (day shifts only). The successful candidate will become a valued member of the MTS team, gaining exposure to open pit, underground and progressive closure activities. Ekati offers a challenging and rewarding environment for the successful candidate as they rotate through opportunities including open pit and underground planning, drill and blast, and geotechnical engineering, scheduling, data analysis and optimization, surveying and project engineering.
Job Duties/Responsibilities
- Protecting of the safety and well-being of yourself and your co-workers;
- Following all Company specific safety protocols, policies and procedures relating to Occupational Health & Safety, Environment and Communities.
- Providing drill & blast designs, prints, mine plans and operational instructions for open pit and underground mining activities;
- Maintaining and continuously improving scheduling and drill and blast processes, procedures and tools;
- Maintaining records for drilling and blasting operations in a manner that follows approved document control procedures;
- Regularly inspecting open pit and underground operations to ensure plan compliance and to identify opportunities to improve our practices;
- Providing survey deliverables to open pit and underground production teams;
- Resolving field issues in a timely manner;
- Engaging with other members of the Mine Technical Services and Operations teams to continuously improve safe ore production while minimizing cost;
- Tracking, analyzing and reporting from relevant data sets to provide and assess plan inputs and compliance; and
- Attending daily operations meetings as required.
Education/Experience
- Degree in Mining, Mineral or Geological Engineering from an accredited university. Equivalent education in Civil Engineering with a focus on rock or soil mechanics will also be considered;
- 0 to 2 years of experience in an open pit or underground mining operation. Equivalent experience in a heavy civil industrial environment will also be considered;
- Engineer in Training registration in Canada (preferably Northwest Territories).
- Proficiency with relevant software programs (i.e. MS Office Suite, Ventsim, AutoCAD, Deswik, or Vulcan etc.);
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills (English);
- Leadership, planning and organizational skills;
- Knowledge of general mining safety requirements and procedures;
- Time management and decision-making skills;
- Ability to work comfortably in a surface or underground environment, working from heights and in confined spaces;
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team to achieve best-in-class efficiency and productivity;
- Class 5 driver's license is required.
- Experience working in the mining industry, northern Canada, and an understanding of the northern regulatory environment is preferred

Additional Information
The Company provides travel to and from the Ekati mine site out of Calgary, Yellowknife, and other northern fly points.
