Job summary

Qualus is seeking an Engineer III - Structural in our T&D Canada business. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, this role is based in Vancouver, BC, with responsibilities spanning design, analysis, and coordination for substations including GIS switchgear buildings.

The ideal candidate holds a Structural Engineering degree and a P.Eng. or EGBC eligibility, with 5–8 years of relevant experience. Collaboration across disciplines and mentoring teammates are key aspects.

Qualifications

• Structural engineering degree and professional designation (P.Eng. or EGBC eligibility).
• 5–8 years of structural engineering design experience.
• Experience with substation design including BC Hydro assets is a plus.
• Knowledge of Canadian codes and standards (CSA, OH&S).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to structural design, technical support, and QA/QC for substations from concept to detailed design.
• Perform structural analysis and modeling using SAP2000, LPILE, SAFE, and MathCAD.
• Prepare and review design documents, reports, plans, and specifications.
• Review vendor documents against specifications.
• Coordinate project resource planning, scope, schedule, and budget for the structural team.
• Build and maintain relations with external partners; present data to clients.
• Lead or participate in client meetings and site visits to collect or deliver data.
• Mentor less experienced engineering team members.
• Collaborate with other disciplines for integrated project delivery.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to structural design, technical support and quality assurance/quality control review including calculations, design, design drawing reviews from conceptual level to detailed design for substation facilities, including equipment support structures and footings, transmission towers & poles and control room and indoor GIS switchgear buildings
• Perform structural analysis and modeling using industry-standard software such as SAP2000, LPILE, SAFE, and MathCAD
• Preparation and review of detailed design documents including design basis, design reports, design plans, construction specifications, field review plans and reports
• Review of vendor documents against specifications
• Respond to requests from construction sites and complete project documentation, including as-builts, calculations, and returning data to clients
• Coordinate and oversee the development of project resource planning, scope, schedule, and budget for a structural discipline project team
• Establish and maintain professional relationships with our external business partners; present information and respond to questions from individual or groups of clients
• Direct and/or participate in client meetings/job site visits to collect or deliver design and engineering data
• Mentor less experienced engineering team members
• Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery

Minimum Qualifications

• Structural Engineering Degree from a recognized university along with a Canadian Professional Engineering Designation (P.Eng.) or the ability to register as a Professional Engineer with EGBC
• 5 - 8 years of structural engineering design experience
• Experience with structural design for utility substations, particularly projects for BC Hydro is considered an asset
• Knowledge of applicable Canadian codes and standards, including Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and CSA standards, as well as North American transmission structure design standards
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
