Job summary

We are hiring three Emergency Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) at Boreal Veterinary Centre in Edmonton, AB. The role spans 10‑hour shifts across days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays to support a growing emergency caseload.

As part of the Emergency team, RVTs will provide gold‑standard care, mentor colleagues, and contribute to rounds and continuous professional development while delivering excellent client service in a fast‑paced hospital environment.

Qualifications

• Active ABVMA/ABVTA membership required.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Desire to grow RVT profession and mentor others.
• Confidence with routine RVT skills: monitoring, venipuncture, IV catheter.
• Proficiency with monitoring equipment (pulse oximetry, ECG, capnography).
• Strong communication, time management, and feedback skills.
• Commitment to ongoing education and professional development.

Responsibilities

• Conduct physical exams and patient assessments.
• Administer medications and monitor patients.
• Supervise Animal Care Assistants and support staff.
• Communicate with clients via phone, email, or in person.
• Prepare estimates and review informed consent with clients.
• Administer anesthesia and monitor recovery.
• Perform venipuncture and catheter placements.
• Maintain medical records with accuracy.
• Support DVMs and mentor team members.
• Contribute to hospital flow improvements.

Status: Full-Time Permanent (40 hours per week)

About the Opportunity

As Boreal Veterinary Centre's Emergency Department continues to grow, we are seeking three (3) Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) to join our team. These positions will support our expanding caseload and help us continue delivering exceptional patient care, outstanding client service, and collaborative veterinary medicine in a fast-paced emergency environment.

This position follows a rotating schedule consisting of 10-hour shifts, including days, afternoons, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.

Prerequisites

• A ctive member of the ABVMA and ABVTA


• Ability to lift 50 lbs (22 kg)


• A desire to grow the RVT profession


• Confidence with basic RVT skills including patient monitoring, venipuncture, and IV catheter placement


• Proficiency with monitoring equipment (pulse oximetry, ECG, capnography, etc.)


• Willingness to create opportunities for themselves, the hospital, and their patients


• Intent to share knowledge and expertise with others to elevate them


• Ability to provide constructive feedback to the team and Management

This role is a partnership and collaboration with veterinarians to provide gold standard medical care to our critical patients. Essential Job Functions

• Conduct physical examinations and patient assessments


• Calculate, draw, and administer oral and injectable medications


• Supervise and support Animal Care Assistants with their patient care


• Effectively communicate with clients via phone, email, and in person


• Generate estimates and review informed consent with clients


• Administer, monitor, and recover patients from anesthesia


• Perform medical procedures as prescribed by the veterinarian


• Perform venipuncture and catheter placements


• Use in-house laboratory equipment and submission reference laboratory tests as needed


• Obtain quality images with Xray, CT or ultrasound


• Perform advanced diagnostic tests including scopes


• Fill prescriptions, relay orders for compounded medications


• Admit and set- up patients for hospitalization and transfer to ICU


• Manage hospitalized patients, perform recovery care and additional specialized treatments


• Assist DVMs with appointments


• Perform tech appointments


• Double check aftercare for the Animal Care Attendants


• Assist with maintenance and quality control of equipment


• Mentor and support other members of the veterinary team


• Contribute suggestions to improve hospital flow and patient care


• Maintain detailed and accurate medical records


• Other tasks as deemed necessary
