Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital are Building the Future of Care Together (BFCT) by developing a shared vision for the future of health care and new hospital infrastructure to care for more patients in our community closer to home for decades to come.

Led by the Joint VP of Redevelopment, the Building the Future of Care Together Redevelopment Team works collaboratively across both Grand River and St. Mary’s General hospitals to plan, design, and build all components of the redevelopment project together as a new, single organization. This plan includes: A new, state-of-the-art hospital site in Kitchener-Waterloo; renewing and repurposing the existing mid-town K-W Campus as an ambulatory and urgent care centre; renewing and expanding the Freeport Campus in Kitchener for modernized and expanded rehabilitation capacity.

All sites would be governed by the new, single organization following the planned merger of Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital in 2025.

We currently have a full-time opportunity for an Emergency Preparedness Coordinator within the Enterprise Risk, Privacy & Governance team.

How Emergency Preparedness Coordinator support our teams at Grand River and St. Mary’s General Hospital:

The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator will lead, coordinate and facilitate the ongoing development of the Emergency Preparedness program to ensure readiness for the merger in the short term, and a robust emergency preparedness program that supports risk mitigation, quality and safety in the ongoing future.

Report to Manager, Risk & Emergency Preparedness, the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator will:

  1. Ensure that NewCo will have an effective ongoing emergency preparedness program to manage the continued development, implementation and education of emergency code responses throughout the organization (as applicable), with the ultimate goal of ensuring quality and safety throughout all sites. The key components of the emergency preparedness program will include ongoing coordination and review of existing emergency codes, creation and implementation of ongoing education materials with input from internal key players and external partners. In addition to coordination of continuous mock exercises to educate staff and meet accreditation standards. The incumbent would be responsible for all these components.
  2. Reflect and uphold the organization's mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities.
  3. Steward the emergency preparedness program, support the rollout in the short term for NewCo, and ensure adherence to the program in the long term.
  4. Promote alignment of emergency code policies with the organization's mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities.
  5. Act as the central coordinator for hospital-wide emergency code policy management and support (as applicable). This involves collaborating with various departmental policy owners on emergency code policy work.
  6. Provide guidance and support on emergency code processes to ensure consistency across all sites, highlight accreditation standards, and promote best practices in other aspects of emergency preparedness where appropriate.
  7. (Co)-Chair an emergency preparedness steering/code committee to oversee the emergency code policies review (as applicable), maintain and coordinate emergency code policy updates, coordinate mock exercises, and lead the ongoing operations of such committee.
  8. Act as the bridge between the lead(s) of the clinical policy management and the emergency preparedness program to ensure consistency in how the code policies are managed and educated across the organization.

Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Will Bring The Following:

  1. Certificate, preferably in emergency preparedness or a healthcare related discipline.
  2. Educational qualifications in project management will be an asset.
  3. Three years of work experience with two years in a role(s) that involved project management, liaising between multiple key players and managing change, preferably in a health care setting.
  4. Should have knowledge of emergency preparedness and best practices.
  5. Familiarity with the current code policies approaches at both hospitals would be a definite asset.
  6. Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including, ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy with diverse groups of stakeholders.
  7. Demonstrated effectiveness in identifying and analyzing situations and problems; finding viable solutions with consideration to total systems and strategies.
  8. Demonstrated effective utilization of resources consistent with departmental goals.
  9. Demonstrated professional work attitudes and behaviours in interaction with internal and external contacts.
  10. Demonstrated effectiveness as a team member through collaboration, respect and effective communication.
  11. Intermediate level proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite of products (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
  12. Good attendance record.
