Salary Range: $23.91-$30.29 per hour
Work Term: Full-Time 1-year Term (possibility of extension)
Position Overview: We are seeking a motivated Emergency Planning Coordinator to join our team in an exciting and impactful role! This position focuses on supporting the development of a Disaster Resiliency Innovation Plan for three First Nations communities: Skowkale, Aitchelitz, and Yakweakwioose. Working closely with the Community Safety Coordinator and a consultant, you will play a vital role in enhancing the disaster preparedness and resilience of these communities. This entry-level role is ideal for someone with a passion for community engagement, problem-solving, and a willingness to learn. No prior experience in emergency management is required, as training and professional development opportunities will be provided.
Key Responsibilities:
Disaster Resiliency Innovation Plan Development
- Collaborate with the Community Safety Coordinator and a consultant to assist in creating a Disaster Resiliency Innovation Plan tailored to the unique needs of Skowkale, Aitchelitz, and Yakweakwioose First Nations.
- Coordinate and schedule meetings with community leadership and members to gather input and align priorities.
- Assist in assessing the current levels of preparedness, identifying gaps, and proposing innovative solutions to enhance resiliency.
- Actively participate in planning sessions and contribute to the design of strategies that reflect the values and goals of the communities.
Community Coordination and Engagement
- Engage with community members and leadership to ensure broad representation in the disaster resiliency planning process.
- Work with the Community-to-Community (C2C) working group to align priorities and improve coordination across participating communities.
- Support the implementation of the Disaster Resiliency Innovation Plan, including community-driven initiatives and projects.
Education and Professional Development
- Enroll in emergency management courses through the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) and other recognized institutions to build technical expertise.
- Attend and observe emergency response operations in other communities to gain practical insights and experience.
- Participate in tabletop exercises, simulations, and drills to enhance preparedness and response skills.
- Stay informed on best practices and strategies in disaster resiliency and emergency management.
Plan Maintenance and Preparedness
- Schedule and facilitate regular meetings to review and update the disaster resiliency and emergency preparedness plans as risks evolve.
- Monitor threats to the health and safety of the participating communities (e.g., flooding) and ensure coordinated responses with partner agencies.
- Maintain an inventory of emergency equipment to ensure readiness in case of an emergency.
Training and Community Education
- Develop and present workshops, exercises, and informational sessions to increase community awareness and preparedness.
- Facilitate training events in emergency management and Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) protocols.
Emergency Communications and Liaison
- Collaborate with community leadership to create and implement a comprehensive emergency communication plan.
- Act as a liaison between First Nations communities, external response organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
Other Duties
- Perform additional tasks as required or assigned to support the overall success of the Disaster Resiliency Innovation Plan and related initiatives.

Required Qualifications
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with emergency planning work
- Completion of cultural sensitivity training.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Completion of Emergency Management Courses
Working Conditions
- Shared office environment and community fieldwork.
- Flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required for meetings, events, and emergency response.
- Regular interaction with community members, leadership, and external organizations.
- Occasional travel between the participating First Nations communities.
