Emergency Medicine Specialist (Medical Specialist)

OFFICER | Full Time, Part Time

As a member of the military, Emergency Medicine Specialists (FRCPC(EM)) are certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and belong to the Medical Specialist occupation in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

Overview

Emergency Medicine Specialists in the CAF provide specialized urgent and emergent resuscitative care in pre-hospital and hospital environments for Canadian Forces Health Services during domestic and international operations. They have leadership roles within CAF Health Services and serve as mentors and educators for military healthcare providers. Their primary responsibilities include:

  • Participating in multidisciplinary emergency resuscitation teams in deployed settings both in Canada and internationally;
  • Providing in-transport care as part of specialized Forward Air Evacuation teams for injured or ill CAF members;
  • Educating and mentoring other emergency medicine providers and advising on best practices in resuscitation care;
  • Maintaining clinical skills through positions in civilian healthcare facilities that meet CAF requirements;
  • Contributing to healthcare policy development within the CAF.
Work Environment

Emergency Medicine Specialists maintain clinical readiness by working in larger civilian hospitals across Canada, alongside civilian colleagues. They participate in education, research, military skills training, and field exercises. Deployment to unique clinical environments may be required for domestic and international operations.
