Embedded Linux Field Engineering Manager

We are hiring an Embedded Linux Field Engineering Manager to lead a regionally-focused team of Field Engineers in Presales and Professional Services, assisting customers with solution architecture, design, and delivery.

Location

This is a remote role, managing a team in one of three regions: Americas, EMEA, or APAC. You must be located in one of these regions to manage the respective team across multiple time zones.

Role Overview

Our Field Engineers are thought leaders, helping customers solve complex problems. They are accomplished technologists with a hands-on approach to embedded Linux strategy and delivery. They are passionate about helping customers achieve technical and business goals, showcasing how Canonical’s open source approach benefits emerging edge compute fields. They also develop their colleagues’ skills and understanding of technology, customer business, and continuous improvement.

This role requires a blend of skills, including proficiency in Linux, coding and scripting, experience with low-level Linux boot, BIOS, firmware, and embedded software development methodologies. Candidates should enjoy diverse client engagements, be business-focused, and pride themselves on teamwork and success.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and develop a team of Field Engineers (from graduate to senior) in Presales and Professional Services.
  • Assist customers with solutions, promoting technologies as a trusted advisor.
  • Work remotely within a single major time zone.
  • Mentor, coach, and provide career development feedback.
  • Monitor and improve team health indicators.
  • Implement disciplined engineering practices.
  • Represent your team and product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Develop and promote best engineering and organizational practices.
  • Plan and track progress on goals and projects.
  • Collaborate with other leaders as part of the leadership team.
Candidate Profile
  • Strong academic record from high school and university.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Extensive experience with embedded Linux (Yocto or similar).
  • Deep Linux experience, preferably with Debian or Ubuntu.
  • Proficiency in Golang, Python, C, C++, or Rust.
  • Experience managing small teams.
  • Customer engagement experience.
  • Professional fluency in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, accountability.
  • Result-driven with a commitment to meet goals.
  • Ability to communicate technology benefits in business terms.
  • Quick learner, humble, and adaptable.

Desirable traits include RTOS experience, additional programming and human languages, and prior remote, diverse, distributed work experience.
