Job summary

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is seeking an Occasional Teacher to support elementary instruction across divisions. The board emphasizes equity, inclusion and Indigeneity, with a focus on multilingual learners and students with IEPs.

Candidates must hold Ontario teaching certification and be eligible to teach in two divisions. The role requires commitment to 30 days of school-year service and participation in a diverse, inclusive learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Certified by the Ontario College of Teachers in good standing.
  • Qualified to teach in at least two divisions (Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate).
  • Available to commit to a minimum of 30 full days per school year (10 days Sep–Jan, 20 days Feb to last instructional day).

Responsibilities

  • Plan meaningful learning activities when required, ensuring continuity of instruction in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Use a variety of instructional tools and strategies, including technology, to enhance learning and meet diverse learning styles, strengths, and needs.
  • Adapt lessons and materials to support multilingual learners, students with IEPs, and varied readiness levels.
  • Utilize assessment and evaluation practices.
  • Cultivate a space of belonging by embedding Indigenization, inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility in classrooms and schools.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with students, staff, and community to support understanding and engagement.

The Role

The role and responsibilities of an Occasional teacher could include, but is not limited to:

  • Demonstrate strong understanding of the Ontario Elementary Curriculum and related Ministry documents.
  • Plan meaningful learning activities when required , ensuring continuity of instruction in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Use a variety of instructional tools and strategies, including technology, to enhance learning and meet diverse learning styles, strengths, and needs.
  • Implement strategies to maintain routines, manage behaviour, and ensure smooth transitions.
  • Adapt lessons and materials to support multilingual learners, students with IEPs, and varied readiness levels.
  • Utilize assessment and evaluation practices.
  • Cultivate a space of belonging by embedding practices of Indigenizing, inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility in classrooms and schools . Done in alignment with HWDSB principles and tools, such as: A commitment to cultivating and nurturing meaningful relationships between HWDSB and the Indigenous Education Circle, as outlined in our Indigenous Education policy.   • Communicates clearly and respectfully with students, staff, and community to support understanding and engagement.
Position Requirements/Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse communities , students with special needs, and/or in high-priority schools locally or abroad.
  • Applicable leadership experience (e.g., special assignment, consultant, itinerant teacher).
  • Evidence of participation in co -curricular and/or extra- curricular activities within schools.
  • Additional AQs and language fluency in addition to English and French.

In addition to the above, the following are Additional Basic Qualifications (ABQs) and Additional Qualifications (AQs) that HWDSB is currently looking to add to our Occasional Teacher roster:

Compensation

Daily rate of pay starts at $291.87 (includes 4% vacation pay).

Individual wage for Long-Term Occasional work is based on QECORating Statement and Grid Placement.
