Job summary

Providence Health Care seeks an Electroneurophysiology Technologist to perform EEG, EMG (NCS) and Evoked Potentials testing across St. Paul’s Hospital and affiliated sites.

The role involves explaining procedures to patients, preparing them for tests, and generating technical reports for interpretation by medical staff. The ideal candidate has completion of an Electroneurophysiology Technology program and CBRET certification, with eligibility to attain BRETC/AAET within three years.

Qualifications

• Completion of a recognized Electroneurophysiology Technology program plus two years' related experience.
• Certification with the Canadian Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (CBRET).
• Certification with the Board of Registration of Electromyography Technologists of Canada (BRETC) and/or the AAET to be attained within first three years of hire.

Responsibilities

• Explain EEG, EMG and EP procedures to patients and prep for testing.
• Perform EEG, EMG (NCS) and EP testing across hospital areas including ICU and nurseries.

Job description

The salary range for this position is CAD $38.93/Hr. - CAD $48.59/Hr. The hours of work, including start and stop times, days off, work area and work site may be subject to change consistent with operations requirements and applicable provisions of the Collective Agreement and statutes. Testing may be required. A criminal record check may be required.

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, Ambulatory Care and receiving work direction from the Physician Head, Neurology, the Electroneurophysiology Technologist performs

• technical functions related to Diagnostic Neurophysiology
• conducting various tests such as Electroencephalography (E.E.G.)
• evoked Potentials (EP) and components of Electromyography (EMG) such as Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
• recording measurements and formulating technical reports for interpretation by medical staff

Education

Completion of a recognized Electroneurophysiology Technology program plus two years' recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Certification with the Canadian Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (CBRET). Certification with the Board of Registration of Electromyography Technologists of Canada (BRETC) and/or the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AAET) to be attained within first three (3) years of hire.

Your Day to Day

• Explains EEG, EMG (NCS) and/or EP diagnostic procedures to patients, records patient's clinical history and required clinical baseline information and prepares patient for testing by measuring patient's head, lowering skin impedances, applying electrodes onto the predetermined measured positions on patient's head and body and ensuring appropriate electrode impedances. Sedates patient as required.
• Performs standard EMG (NCS), EEG recordings and/or EP testing across the hospital including the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Special Care Nursery and Neonatal EEG recordings and portable EMG(NCS)/EEG/EP testing on acute care wards, recognizing physiological and non-physiological artifacts and taking appropriate steps to eliminate them
• Conducts Evoked Potential Tests such as visual, brainstem and somato-sensory evoked responses using a variety of equipment by performing duties such as locating and stimulating nerves, applying recording electrodes to patient, assessing patients' responses and making necessary adjustments to equipment to ensure a complete study is conducted.
• For EEG testing, documents normal and abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the test such as the clinical seizure. Uses activation procedures such as hyperventilation as appropriate, photic stimulation, and sleep. Monitors other variables such as electromyograms, electrocardiogram, electro-oculograms, and respiration, as appropriate.
• For EP testing, documents and verifies adequate stimulation parameters, including location, polarity, intensity, illumination, fixation, cooperation, as appropriate for each modality. Identifies significant EP waveforms on the test printout including their latency and amplitude for the interpreting neurologist's use.
• Conducts and records EMG (NCS) on clients by performing duties such as operating a variety of equipment, adjusting equipment during test process, observing monitor, taking appropriate measurements from test data produced and entering calculated results into the computer to demonstrate whether abnormalities exist.
• Ensures a satisfactory recording for testing the electroencephalographer's interpretation. Provides detailed technical impression to physicians, as appropriate.
• Removes electrodes from patient and prepares patient for discharge. Cleans and disinfects recording electrodes, equipment and supplies for next patient.
• Demonstrates procedures to Electroneurophysiology students and residents during clinical practicums at St. Paul's Hospital. Provides instruction to student(s) by giving guidance and direction as required.
• Performs basic equipment troubleshooting and reports EMG(NCS)/EEG/EP equipment failure to supervisor. Notifies supervisor when supplies are needed.
