About New Westminster Schools

Serving the community of New Westminster the New Westminster School District provides high quality educational programs to over 7000 students in a variety of learning environments. New Westminster is in the center of Metro Vancouver between the larger communities of Burnaby Coquitlam Surrey and Richmond. Despite its location the city is relatively small and has retained a strong sense of history and community. The total population is approximately 82000 and expected to grow to 104000 by 2041. District schools are in general fully subscribed and a steady increase in student enrolment is expected over the next ten years.

Job Function :

  • Reports to the Director of Facilities and Operations or the Maintenance Manager
  • Installs upgrades services repairs and tests electrical components and equipment such as lights circuit breakers fans and motors and systems such as power distribution and emergency lightingto ensure safe and efficient operation
  • Installs upgrades services repairs and tests low voltage systems such as security direct digitalcontrol PA system equipment fire and intruder alarms and fibre optics to ensure safe and efficient operation
  • Responds to electrical emergencies through District facilities
  • Exercises independent judgement in troubleshooting electrical technical problems
  • Prioritizes work orders and organizes daily work schedule
  • Reads and interprets plans drawings and specifications of District facilities for the layout of electrical system upgrades and repairs
  • Develops manual plans sketches and drawings for the purpose of job layouts permit applications and estimating time and materials required to complete the work
  • Provides technical advice and information in the electrical trade capacity
  • Operates a District vehicle and maintains the vehicles electrical equipment and materials inventory as necessary. Inspects the vehicle for safe operation and reportsdefects to the supervisor as per District procedures. Performs minor maintenance such as keeping the vehicle clean and adding operating fluidsas required
  • Completes written records related to work performed
  • Ensures work area remains safe and free of debris while on the job site at the end of each day and upon completion of work order
  • Maintains familiarity with standards codes and by-laws regulating the electrical trade
  • Maintains current knowledge of technological procedural and regulatory developments
  • Performs duties in compliance with District and Government health and safety procedures and regulations that relate to work performed to minimize potential foraccidents injuries or hazards
  • Performs other job-related duties of comparable importance difficulty and responsibilityas required

Qualifications :

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • B.C. Red Seal or Interprovincial Certificate of Qualification in Electrical work (T.Q.)
  • Two (2) years experience at a Journeyman level in commercial and institutional electrical service work including maintenance repair and installation of commercialand industrial equipment
  • Competency in the use and care of tools and equipment common to the trade
  • Working knowledge of computerized control software and equipment applicable to the electrical trade

  • Experience and knowledge in electronics and low voltage systems is an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of current techniques methods procedures and equipment applicable to the electrical trade
  • Ability to organize workload work under periodic pressure and complete assignments with minimal supervision
  • Ability to perform duties in a courteous and cooperative manner and to deal effectively with others
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting pushing pulling and moving materials equipment and supplies and working in confined spaces
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers Licence
  • Hours of Work & Salary :

  • 40 hours per week normally 7 : 00a.m. 3 : 00p.m. Monday Friday at $41.07 per hour ($0.15 / hour LMA)
