Hitachi Rail is seeking an Electrical Installations Design Engineer – Rail Systems in downtown Toronto to lead detailed electrical layouts, cable routing and coordination across disciplines for safe and constructible outcomes.

You will ensure compliance with Ontario codes and project requirements, collaborate with civil/structural teams, and support design reviews, RFIs and installation activities through the full project cycle.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • P.Eng license or immediate eligibility preferred.
  • 3–7 years of raceway design, equipment installation and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit and BIM tools.
  • Knowledge of CSA/ESA and electrical code compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed layouts for electrical installations, including equipment arrangements, cable trays, conduits, junction boxes, supports and terminations.
  • Design cable segregation and EMI shielding strategies to minimize interference.
  • Ensure compatibility between power, control, and communication systems per codes and project plans.
  • Coordinate interfaces with RSSOM, Civil Contractors and other disciplines.
  • Prepare installation drawings and material specifications using AutoCAD/Revit; review BIM models for clashes.

Electrical Installations Design Engineer – Rail Systems

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self‑motivated Electrical Installations Design Engineer – Rail Systems, as we are expanding and currently bidding on new business opportunities. The position will be part of the full cycle of the project. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Role Summary

The Electrical Installations Design Engineer is responsible for the detailed design and coordination of electrical installation systems, including equipment layout, cable routing, conduit layouts, cable trays, and associated hardware for power, control, and communication circuits. This role ensures compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications while working closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient, and constructible designs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed layouts for electrical installations, including equipment arrangements, cable trays, conduits, junction boxes, support systems, penetrations and terminations.
  • Design cable segregation and shielding strategies to minimize electromagnetic interference.
  • Ensure compatibility between power, control, and communication systems in accordance with codes, standards and project plans.
  • Coordinate physical installation interfaces with RSSOM subsystems, Civil Contractors and other disciplines, including equipment interfaces, openings, penetrations, supports and installation constraints.
  • Prepare installation drawings, cable routing/raceway schedules, and material specifications using AutoCAD/Revit.
  • Collaborate with civil, structural, and mechanical teams to integrate electrical installations within buildings and civil structures spatial constraints.
  • Coordinate with building systems (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection) to avoid clashes and ensure equipment accessibility and overall constructability.
  • Review and coordinate BIM models, identify and resolve clashes, and define installation/routing requirements.
  • Ensure designs meet Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC), applicable CSA and NFPA standards, applicable building codes and project requirements.
  • Support regulatory/authority reviews, inspections and design assurance activities as required.
  • Support RFIs, design queries, constructability reviews and resolution of installation‑related issues during detailed design and construction.
  • Provide technical guidance during installation, equipment installation and cable pulling activities.
  • Verify equipment installation requirements including access, maintenance clearances, replacement/removal routes and cable entry requirements.
  • Review as‑built drawings and verify compliance with design intent.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent relevant technical qualification.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or immediate eligibility preferred.
  • 3–7 years of experience in raceway design, equipment installation, multidisciplinary coordination and constructability.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Autodesk ACC, BlueBeam ReVu.
  • Strong knowledge of cable management systems principles, codes and installation practices.
  • Strong knowledge of EMI/EMC segregation principles and compatibility between power, control, and communication systems.
Skills & Competencies
  • Excellent spatial planning and coordination skills.
  • Strong understanding of cable derating, grouping, and fire protection requirements.
  • Strong interface management and multidisciplinary coordination skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple interfaces and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with rail, transit, or large‑scale commercial projects (Preferred).
  • Familiarity with BIM clash detection and 3D modeling for raceway systems.
  • Knowledge of CSA certification and ESA inspections for electrical installations.
  • Clear Criminal Background Check required.

Salary Range

Salary Range: CAD $ 95,102 to CAD $142,653 per year.
